What do you need help with? How much should a garage charge to find a water leak which is a core plug sum where by the water pump and replace it with a new 1 plz with regards

Repair shops charge a rate that is considered a flat rate for a job according to a standard labor book. The book lists make, model and job according to the manufacturers expert repair mechanics. They then multiply that by the shop rate, the shop rate can be anywhere from 65 to 170 dollars an hour. So the book says a water pump job is 2 hours and the shop rate is 100 so the job cost is 200. That does not include parts. A job like you are talking about is a diagnostic fee, then a general labor charge based on time. So it is impossible to tell.

What is the flat rate time to replace rack and pinion 2001 toyota corolla?

Shade tree mechanic that knows what he's doing could do it in about an hour. Shops charge by the book no matter how quick they do it. If the book says 4 hours you will pay for 4 hours even if it only takes 1.

In a 2001 Mitsubishi eclipse spyder gt how long should a timing belt change take a mechanic

Sometimes the times are in your service book you can check there what the dealership estimated. I would say they would charge between 2 - 4 hours ~$250 - $400. You may have a mechanic who charges a cheaper rate specialist. Generally most replace the water pump at the same time when you get this job done as it needs to be removed anyhow and they are usually not that much $.

"Book time" for a 2002 Montana is 2.5 hours at skill level D to remove and replace the thermostat. You can of course replace it yourself.
  • Remove air cleaner & duct assembly
  • Drain coolant
  • Remove crossover exhaust pipe
  • Remove radiator hose
  • Remove thermostat housing bolts & clean threads
  • Remove thermostat housing and gasket
  • Remove old gasket completely.
  • Clean housing
  • Replace thermostat and install new gasket
  • Reverse disassembly instructions to reassemble.
  • Refill with 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL or equivalent coolant and clean drinkable water.

How many hours and how much is the cost to replace a head gasket on a BMW 528 I

Most shops will quote about 11.5 hours of labor at about $95 to $125 per hour. An experienced tech can do the job in 8 hours but you will likely get charged the book rate of 11.5 hours. Gasket set is about $250 or more from a shop or order it form Autohaus for $195. Also add in the cost of radiator fluid and synthetic oil and filter. Other possible costs will be head resurfacing, valve job, or total head replacement if you have a crack in it. Also consider replacement of water pump and thermostat at this time. Total at a shop, depending where you go, will run from low end of about $1,500 up to $2,500. Much higher if your head is gone and needs replaced.

I was just informed that my 2004 525i needs the valve cover gasket replaced. My bill will be $795 for this. I'm not sure why, since I don't understand the process, and I'm hoping someone can explain this...

I show the average cost to replace a valve cover gasket on this 6 cylinder engine in this model and year as approx $300.00, so something else must have been done besides the valve cover. If it was just the valve cover gasket then you need to ask some questions about this outrageous repair bill!!

My source for prices is a nationally recognized labor and parts guide, here is the link to the estimate of the repair.

How much is the cost to replace a timing belt and how much time should it take?

A simple belt replacement is typically about $400 on your car (02-06 Camry V6)

The belt retails for $52 from Toyota.

The book labor time is 3.6 hours (at whatever your local shops charge, typically around $90 per hour)

Common add-on repairs at the time is the waterpump for an additional half hour plus parts, and the cam shaft seals (which are notorious leakers on this engine!) which is an additional 2 hours labor (plus parts). That time is fairly generous though, and most shops (mine included) typically charge much less to add the cam seals..
