Also the key can't be remove if there isn't any power to the ignition. And this would also cause the starter not to work. You can move it, but not get it to the off position.

The key can go forward and back just not out. It has been running fine no issues until I came home from work put it in park shut off the engine. When I shut it off the dash lights stayed on. The lights for the speedometer and the lights around the heater controls. I didn't realize they didn't eventually turn off like usual until a few hours had past and I got back inside to leave. I put the key in and nothing no start at all and my key was stuck. My neighbor did some starter trick and it started I shut it off and tried starting it again and again no start. I'm really not mechanically inclined so I have really no idea what to do. I don't want to take it to a shop and get taken for a fool because I'm not up to par in auto mechanics. Which I've been taken advantage of before because I'm a single mother and pretty much easy prey I guess.

Most likely it is the lock set that is bad. The ignition switch could come into place also. You have to remove the column bezel to access either one of them. Let me know if your up to it. I will give more info.

It has to do with the shifter interlock ! Fix a lot of them , it's not the key cylinder ! I work at a GM dealer ship , chevy cobalts ! There is a hole on the under side of steering coluum , if you stick a thin tool up there you can get the key to come out , there is a TSB GM has out !

  • Randy Ohler Apr 04, 2015

Why didn't you tell her how to fix it then Jeff? Instead or referring her to a TSB that she wouldn't make sense of anyway. They can be confusing. She is talking about a Bravada, not a Cobalt. There is a difference. PLease keep you TSB numbers to your self, unless you are willing to explain them in a way that people will understand. Not one of your state ments told her how to fix the problem. Just a place to go. At least i Gave her a starting point.

General Motors has decided that certain 2002-2003 model year Chevrolet TrailBlazer and TrailBlazer EXT; GMC Envoy and Envoy XL; Oldsmobile Bravada; and 2003 model year HUMMER H2 vehicles fail to conform to Federal/Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 114, Theft Protection. These vehicles are equipped with a mechanical override that could allow the ignition key to be removed with the shift lever in a position other than PARK. In addition, these vehicles have an override that can allow the transmission to be shifted out of PARK with the ignition in the OFF position. These overrides are not permitted unless the vehicles has a locking steering column

Can you turn the key to start the vehicle ? Can you turn to lock position ? Change lock cylinder !

  • dominga pacheco Apr 04, 2015

I can turn the key forward and backwards it won't come out. I tried to start it and nothing. A neighbor did some sort of starter trick and it started but when I shut it off it wouldn't start again with the key still stuck in the ignition. Its in park and I tried to shift it into another gear but it won't let me do that either.

  • Jeff Armer Apr 04, 2015

You have a problem with the shifter inertlock !

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System

  • Jeff Armer Apr 04, 2015

The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

  • Jeff Armer Apr 04, 2015

The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid

  • Jeff Armer Apr 04, 2015

The automatic transmission shift lock control switch

  • Jeff Armer Apr 04, 2015

With the ignition in the ON position, voltage is supplied to automatic transmission shift lock control switch. Voltage flows through the normally closed contacts of the automatic transmission shift lock control switch to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is permanently grounded. This energizes the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid causing the transmission shift lever to be physically locked in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is pressed the contacts in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch open, de-energizing the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid. This allows the shift lever to be move out of the PARK position.

Possibly shift interlock problem check the btsi fuse in the instrument fuse panel. There is a shift lock actuator in the column or center console that could be your culprit depending on if you have a column or floor shifter.

After replacing the gear shift cable on my Oldsmobile Bravada the key will not come all the way back to the lock position and the battery light stays on.

im not sure what linkage you replaced cause it is electronic. if key is stuck in acc. posision the problem is the ignition switch. the reason i say this is cause when you turn the key it elec. releases the shifter and when the switch gos bad it does not. a new ignition switch should be purchaced from a gm dealer.until fixed you will have to disconnect batt. every time until fixed and i would also use the park brake when not driving.
