SOURCE: speedometer problems

Have the road wheels or tyres been changed from the original manufacturer's specification? If they have been changed for larger (or smaller) diameter wheels this would necessarily alter the vehicle's speedo veracity! This seems the most likely cause of errors in speedo readings. If this is NOT the case, then it sounds like a speedo fault. Best of luck!

My 05 Focus speedometer is wacky. All other gauges and systems work fine. The speedometer needle doesn't go to zero when vehicle stops moving.

Sounds like the speedometer is faulty. If the speed sensor were the problem, the odometer would not work correctly, the transmission would not shift correctly, and the check engine light would be on.

My speedometer goes up and down , and my radio goes on and off

The speedometer can fluctuate rapidly under normal driving conditions when the car's speed changes abruptly, but sometimes the needle can start swinging around the dial without any fluctuation in speed. If the hairspring comes loose or breaks, it can't hold the speed cup in place, and the result is a fluctuation in the dial. In electrical speedometers, if the circuit that counts the magnetic pulses fails, it can cause the speedometer read-out to vary from the actual speed and to shoot upward or downward without notice. If a speed sensor in the automatic transmission starts to malfunction, it can affect the speedometer and cause fluctuations. In these instances, either the speedometer or the sensor needs replacement.

In most cars especially those older models, the speed sensor for the speedometer is located in the transmission. Check for physical wear on the cable that leads from the transmission to the back of the dashboard. If you have increased the size of the tires dramatically, the actual car speed would be slower then the speedometer. Either the components responsible for measuring speed (speed cable, dashboard, speedsensor) is damaged or tire size or transmission parts or the transmission itself was replaced.

Can you replace standard headlights with halogen (bright white) headlights on a 1999 328ci? can you replace 16" wheels with 17" wheels on a 1999 328ci and does that affwct the...

Halogen lights will draw more voltage than the standard lights and will more than likely cause electrical problems by wires and switches and such getting overheated.
Larger tires will make your speedometer read that you are going slower than you are actually going.

Speedometer registers lower speed than car is actually traveling.no check engine light. dealer says can't diagnose without light

If the wheels are stock? The speedometer is a stand alone computer for the speed, And if its not correct the dealer can send it out to calibrate it back to factory specs. Some clusters allow techs to put in tire size to correct calibration, And im pretty sure yours can be set. But only by a dealer.

1992 SC300 Speedometer doesn't read accurately. Can it be calibrated?

No however the speed sensor can be replaced.

A couple of things can throw off the speedo, Tire diamete size, did you go a size up? this will make the speed show slower that you are actually moving. If you did, then it's working correctly. you will just have to make a mental note of the change or go back to the original size.

1996 dodge ram 1500 5.9 2wheel drive automatic code reading multiple cylender misfire, also speed odometer reading 10 to 15mph slower than actual speed ie 55 is actually 80

I need to verify something about your vehicle. Are youan the original owner and did your speedometer suddenly start reading slower, and was reading normally before? Or did you just find out recently because you got a ticket or somebody clocked your speedometer by riding along side you? If you are not the original owner, I would check the tire height rating from the manufacturer versus the rating of the tire you have on the vehicle now. If the manufacturer installed a "G" series and you have a "H" series, for example, your speedometer will read slower than your actual speed as the "H" series is a taller tire. The higher the letter in the series, the taller the tire will be. (larger in diameter)
Regarding your random cylinder misfire, I would recommend replacing the spark plug wires. Also, the be sure to use the conveluet heat shields that surround the wires that are routed around the exhaust manifold. Be sure to route them correctly or the excessive heat will cause them to break down prematurely.

Speedometer appears to register 15 miles less than actual speed

If you have replaced your stock size tires with oversize aftermarket tires and wheels (17 inch stock wheels to 22 inch wheels, etc) you need to have the computer reflashed to compensate for the larger tire size. Larger tires turn slower to maintain the same groundspeed, giving a false speed reading.
