I have a 1996 BMW 328 IC Convertible. The car starts and runs fine for awhile. My problem is the altenator is not charging the battery. I've removed the altenator and had it tested, it works fine off the car. There is 12 volts at the altenator 10 gauge red wire. I installed a New battery, volt meter still reads battery voltage when engine is running. Not charging even though the altenator and battery are both good. It's driving me nuts. It also has drained the battery a few times. I have since repaired 1 wire in the fuse box that I think may have been the culprit for the drain but the thing still won't charge. Any ideas? Should I be looking for a relay or something? Starter solenoid not letting it charge somehow? I've got to get this thing fixed. I can't jump in and start replacing parts, they're expensive for this little piece of work.
Sounds like the alternator may be missing an excitation current source.
Check the 'IGN' dash indicator lights when you turn ignition switch on prior to starting motor,
if not one of the below may be problem:-
1) check exiter control wire is connected to alternator D+ terminal (low current wire, +V with Ign on),
2) replace dash 'IGN' indicator lamp.

- PS.. the charge indicator on the BMW is "-BAT+" (red) located at the top of the dash display, just to the left of centre.
