SOURCE: backing up very loud grinding like bearings

it sounds like the universal joints are going out. get them checked before its to late cause if they go out while your driving it can tear up the transmission and bend the drive shaft. I recently told a girl to change her's in her truck and she waited a couple of weeks and it broke while she was driving and it broke the end of the drive shaft off and broke the rear seal in the transmission!!! it will get exspensive very fast!

I'm hearing a grinding noise when shifting gears in my 97 nissan pathfinder. It's not a full blown grind but just a slight grinding noise. It does it in reverse 1st 2nd 3rd and just started doin it in 4th....

check and/or change the transmission oil. Clutch problems are noticeable in 1st and reverse but as all the rest are syncro controlled you really do not need to use the clutch to change them. just get the engine rpms to match road speed and they will slip in. I am thinking a oil viscosity problem because of the colder weather.

What could cause metal on metal grinding at 40 mph and above on '96 Pathfinder?

First thing is to check the brakes, especially the condition of the pads, and if you have worn right through them, the condition of the calipers, and finally the rotors. Sounds like one of these old the key.
In any case can you get back to us with the solution so that others can be helped in the future, thanks.

Get underneath and check the linkage bar that goes from the shifter inside the cabin to the tranny underneath. Sometimes these bars, especially on GMC vehicles can come off or become stuck, if it does become stuck then you have to take it to a dealer because local mechanics unless they've dealt with it will only make the situation worse. i used to tow cars and trucks and this is a common issue with GMC from the 90s til mid-to late 2000s

HOW TO SHIFT TO 4 WHEEL DRIVE

Hi - Here is instruction how to do.

From N to 4H

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4H".

From 4H to 4H LOCK

You can operate the transfer switch either

when the vehicle is stopped or while the

vehicle is moving.

Position the front wheels straight ahead

and turn the switch to shift into "4H LOCK".

If the vehicle is moving, we recommend

that the speed be less than 100 km/h (60

mph) during this operation.

NOTE:

• When shifting between the transfer

switch position and the transfer gear

position is unmatched, all 4WD indicators

will blink and the buzzer will sound.

• If it is difficult to shift between "4H" and

"4H LOCK" while the vehicle is moving,

try accelerating and decelerating your

vehicle several times after turning the

transfer switch. Be sure to wait until traffic

conditions allow you to accelerate and

decelerate safety before using this procedure.

From 4H LOCK to 4L LOCK

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4L LOCK".

From 4L LOCK to 4H LOCK

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4H LOCK".

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to the mark (1) at the left of the "N"
position, and hold the switch in this posi-

tion for 5 seconds until the "N" indicator

blinks, then turn the switch to the "N" position.

When you turn the transfer switch to the

"N" position, "N" indicator will come on with

the buzzer sound.

CAUTION

• Be sure to stop the vehicle completely

before operating the transfer

switch to shift between "N" and

"4H", or between "4H LOCK" and

"4L LOCK".

• Do not shift between "4H" and "4H

LOCK" unless the front wheels are

in the straight-ahead position and

we recommend that the vehicle

speed be less than 100 km/h (60

mph).

Do not operate the transfer switch

while tires are racing.

• Do not operate your vehicle in "4H

LOCK" or "4L LOCK" on dry, hard

surfaces.

(Continued)

CAUTION

(Continued)

• Do not operate the vehicle while a

4WD mode indicator is blinking

except when shifting between "4H"

and "4L LOCK".

If you operate the vehicle while a

4WD mode indicator is blinking, a

buzzer will sound and the transfer

will shift to "N" (Neutral) to prevent

transfer case damage.

In this case, use the following procedure.

1) Depress the clutch pedal fully (if

equipped) or shift the automatic

transmission gearshift lever to the

"N" position.

2) Turn the transfer switch to the

position previously selected.
3) Operate the transfer switch again.

Please help, how can I release 4H back to normal position.

You may want to try to put automobile in neutral then shift 4 wd lever. Also you may want to lubricate shifting cable and levers under car it should shift out of 4 wd while going down road.

1989 Suzuki 4 wheel drive problem

welcome to part time 4wd, its for ice and offroad ONLY.
rule #1 PT 4wd needs at least 1 tire on ice or say dirt.
if not it will WIND UP AND BIND UP and damage the transfer case chain. (i see you did that)!!!
also the locks love to fail, fixed many.
they need greasing every 15k miles, per the book .
its a constant service, and if water gets inside, AS ALL DO.
then more service. on the wheel locks.
if one fails the whole axle fails in 4wd.(slips but no grind/bind)

got one tire on ICE or now,????
ICE or PACKED SNOW.
PT 4WD IS NOT ALL WHEEL DRIVE,

IT is never FOR DRY PAVEMENT
OR WATER WET PAVEMENT EVER.
IT'S FOR ICE. (ON THE ROAD)

the question is , as for ever 1944 jeeps to now, PT
is what if road is 1/2 ice,?
dry, then ice then dry then ice. dig?

answer, go to 2H and driver slower!!!
or sell car and get a 2004+ Vitara with full time 4wd
in USA suzuki is bugged out, sold all mine, they sux now.
never buy any suzuki in USA or CANADA
buy a real JEEP. (or Rav4 or >?) nor buy any ISUZU. here.
