You have an electrical problem. Power steering cannot work without power and since you are having battery and alternator problems, you are probably trying to operate the car with a dead battery or faulty electrical system.
Have the electrical system checked by a few different reputable mechanics and get 3 quotes for repairs without sharing the information from one shop to the next.
Make sure you understand the warranty on the work and the cost of labor before you choose a service provider.
Edmunds has some interesting discussions on battery power losses in Ford Escapes around your year.

Your Power Steering pump is were the noise comes from, the system fluid must be flushed until it's clean and the PS Pump replaced, around $300 to fix.

Sounds like you need a new power steering hose. To verify this, I would dry up any wet areas on the hose and pump with a towel, get a flashlight and start the vehicle and try to determine the exact site of the leak which is usually at the ends of the hoses. Good luck!

SOURCE: how to remove the right

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Place the transmission in the PARK position.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

Front wheel
Front brake disc
Front axle wheel hub nut and discard the nut
Tie rod end and separate the lower ball from the steering knuckle
Halfshaft from the steering knuckle
Halfshaft

a4053a7.gif

To install:
  1. When seated properly, the halfshaft bearing retainer circlip will snap into the differential side gear groove.
  2. Position the halfshaft and joint so that the splines align with differential side gear splines. Push the halfshaft into side gear.
  3. Install or connect the following:
Halfshaft into the steering knuckle
Lower ball joint to steering knuckle. Torque the pinch bolt to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
Tie rod end. Torque the nut to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
New front axle wheel hub nut. Torque the nut to 214 ft. lbs. (290 Nm).
Front brake disc
Front wheel
To be very honest, a manual to help guide you thru this process should be obtained due to special tools that will be required for this repair procedure. This is a fairly large job, and I do recommend a manual. We do not have full manuals on this site due to copyright laws.

It sounds like the system has air In it.. raise the vehicle up. Both front wheels and turn the steering wheel left and right till all air is out. Should fix your problem.

Ford focus fault finding

I don't know what a "early" sound is, but there are several problems that can cause a screech: the commonest is a slipping power-steering belt combined with a stiffness in the steering rack. The cheapest is probably a stone caught between the brake pads and disc. So first check your tyre pressures, then check your brakes finally, take it to a garage to have the power-steering looked at.

Loud grinding noise under hood, oil like substance on a belt, Power Steering Stiff, has PS fluid

Almost sound like your rack and pinion cylinder has gone bad. I would start by cleaning the area real well to get rid of the oil. With the car running have someone sit inside and turn the wheels from left to right while you stand and watch to see if you can see oil leaking and from where and also to see if you can tell where the grinding is coming from. Please do not try to clean the engine with it running as you will get burned from heat and your clothes may become tangled in moving parts.

Sounds like the power steering pump has failed.
You could take the serpentine belt off and check the pump pulley.

I have a 2003 Ford Escape that is leaking power steering fluid. I replaced the power steering pump and hoses but it is still leaking. It only leaks when the Escape is turned off.

It might be the rack and pinion kit (seals)

I had this problem 2 months ago... replaced the powersteering pump 3 times until I convinced the mechanics to look at the rack and pinion. there they found the leak, especially when I turned the wheel.. They first kept telling me there was air in the lines and it would go away. but that never happened.

Battery light is on and stiff to steer the wheel

Sounds like the serpentine bellt has come off the drive pulleys. this belt is the link between the crankshaft pulley and all the other pulleys. it drives the power steering pump, a/c compressor, and your alternator.
Stiff steering due to no Power steering pump activity and the battery light is on due to the alternator not charging the battery and supplying power to vehicle components.

Power Steering Pump Leaks

call a Ford dealership and give them the VIN of your car and they will let you know if there is a recall on it. the only thing you do to replace it is you take the belt off and remove the line from the pump and take it off but once you put the new pump on and fill with powersteering fluid turn the wheel back and forth left to right to get the air out of the system
