Question about 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse

1 Answer

It start and it runs ruff and give it gas and stalls

I have 1996 eclipse with a 2.0 litter. it sat for a year and a half. i had a new timing belt put on it 2 years a go.so i got it started and drove it all day. i got it home and let it run at a idle for a bout a hour and it went to a hi idle and smoke started comeing out of the back of the moter than shut down.i thought that it ran out of gas and the smoke was from the oil leaking from the volve cover. so i put some gas in it and went to start it and it wouldnt start so i thought that the full fulter was pluged so i changed thin i went to start it a gen and it started now it sounds like it is missing and poping and cant give it no gas or it will die.

Did you check the air filter, hose and throttle body for any foreign material such as a mouse nest. If you replaced fuel filter and added clean fuel its possible you created a small vapour lock check and see if you have a valve similar to to a tire valve on the fuel rail, with motor off and cold pressure up line and do not turn on vehicle release pressure in line. Make sure fuel cap is on tight .

Did you check the oil, did you change the oil and filter. Your pcv valve could be stuck and the hose connected to it could be plugged. Valve should raffle if shakened.

Did you check the radiator for its condition and that the overflow container its at its full mark.

Check and see if plugs are connected in the right timing order and are connected tightly.

Add some fuel conditioner and injector cleaner.

2000 civic running ruff and backfire

Since you replaced the head gasket, your timing marks are off, and I pretty much am totally positive on this. The timing marks on this one are tricky. When you replaced head gasket, did you replace the timing belt and tensioners?? Do a compression test on all cylinders and make sure they are all within specs. If it sounds like it's only running on three cylinders, you have a dead cylinder which could mean broken or badly worn piston rings. From what you described with the backfiring and all, seems that your timing is off a tooth or two yet do a compression test first. Disconnect the fuel pump fuse and remove all spark plugs when you due this. Let me know your progress and i hope this helps. One other thing you should do since the car sat for 5 months is take the gas tank out and get it cleaned out, bad fuel sitting so long.

you may have to replace plugs again, sounds like the valve seals are dried out, That along with dead gas creates a bad cycle, Make sure you fill it up with the best octane fuel you can to off set the bad gas
