Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Am

Just changed my radiator but fluid keeps spraying out of the overflow. There is a small hole in the overflow at the top by the cap. Does a hose go there?

I do believe a small overflow drain hose should attach there.

How do i change the radiator fluid?


Most radiators have a drain plug on the bottom tank the engine block also has a drain plug . Remove the radiator cap ,open both drains ,let all the coolant run out, if there is no radiator plug remove the lower hose , remove the heater demister hoses, with the heater control on hot flush out all the coolant from the heater radiator. with a garden hose, till the water runs clean, tighten the radiator plug or re fit the hose,put a garden hose into the radiator and flush out till the water at the block plug runs clean ,refit the heater hoses, refit the block plug, fill the radiator from the hose leave the cap off , If it has a overflow tank clean and flush it. start and run engine for 5 minutes top up radiator if needed . stop engine and drain out all water. most important that all old coolant is drained out, only buy the best coolant you can . If you make up your own use only distilled water. keep some to top up with never mix with another brand. Fill radiator with coolant top up over flow tank, run engine top up coolant as needed, refit radiator cap run for another 10 minutes check for leaks,

My 1999 chevy s10 blazer overheated while driving and fluids started spraying all over my engine. I'm pretty sure it's antifreeze spraying out. I recently replaced the radiator and it was running fin


If it's spraying out, it's something that is under pressure, like the brand new radiator, maybe a pin hole in it. Were the radiator hoses also replaced at the same time? If not, hoses may have a pin hole too. Can't rule out the new radiator, BUT my guess is one of the radiator hoses caused this. One last possibility is the overflow tank. This also will be under pressure, and if it's old, may also have a crack. Best way to track down a coolant leak is to borrow or rent a pressure test pump. Take the radiator cap off and hook up the pump. Pump it a to get pressure up a bit, but not too much, should see right where the leak is. Most auto parts stores lend this devise out.

Where is overflow container for radiator?


find the radiator cap, now there is a small hose there, follow that hose to the reservoir. usually near the side of the radiator

Van is losing water but the overflows continues to stay full. No cracks in radiator and the cap where you put in the water has a hose going in but no hose on the opposite opening.


In a properly working system, the coolant expands as the coolant temp rises. The excess coolant flows into the overflow container by the hose that runs from the bottom of the overflow to the top of the radiator, under the radiator cap. When the coolant begins to cool down, it contracts,drawing fluid back into the radiator from the overflow. The water pump has a "weep" hole located near the bottom of the pump housing that will leak coolant if the pump is going bad. In some engines, the 3.0, the water pump is located under the camshaft timing belt cover, and is a BEAR to deal with. However, the coolant should be pulled into the radiator when the engine cools, so check that the hose from the top of the radiator is attached to the bottom of the overflow and that it is not blocked or pinched. Have the system pressure tested to verify that it has no leaks. Hope this helps. Dano

I am assuming that the resrvoir under the hood near the passenger's side is for coolant?


Yes it is.If you need to know for sure follow the small overflow hose underneath the radiator cap it runs from the radiator to the coolant tank.

I have a 2007 Impala LT. At the top of my radiator coolant comes out of a hole and drips all over the fan / engine / belts. I think it's an overflow hole, but how do I keep it from overflowing and getting...


If there is a factory looking hole in the top of your radiator, then there should also be a hose close by, that attatches to the "hole"... this hose carries the rad fluid to a plastic reservoir that stores the antifreeze until your radiator needs it, at which time is sucked back into the radiator through the "hole". If you try the hole and prevent the fluid from over flowing, you will cause moew problrms that will cause over heating and a faulty radiator. This "hole" is just under the radiator cap, and should be a stem that sticks out a little to accept the rubber hose to carry the fluid to the reservoir. Easy fix and a relatively simple job to perform.

TO CHANGE RADIATOR FIRST YOU TURN OFF RADIO FIRST TO KEEP FROM LOSING RADIO CODE.DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.RAISE FRONT OF VECHICLE SUPPORT ON JACK STANDS.REMOVE THE LOWER SPLASH SHIELDS.NOW YOU NEED TO DRAIN THE COOLING SYSTEM.CATCH COOLANT IN A LARGE DRAIN PAN.REUSE COOLANT IF ITS FAIRLY NEW.IF COOLANT VERY OLD CHANGE IT.PUT OLD COOLANT IN SOME EMPTY CONTAINER TAKE TO A GARAGE OR WHOEVER DISPOSE IT.DONT POUR ON GROUND.HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT.MOVE THE AIR INTAKE DUCT PASSES OVER THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE.NOW WHEN ALL COOLANT DRAIN OUT.LOOSEN UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSE CLAMPS.THEN DETACH THE RADIATOR HOSES FROM THE FITTINGS.IF THEY ARE STUCK GRASP EACH HOSE NEAR THE END WITH A PAIR OF ADJUSTABLE PLIERS AND TWIST IT TO BREAK THE SEAL THEN PULL IT OFF REMOVE SMALL COOLANT SURGE LINES FROM TOP OF RADIATOR THAT GOES TO THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR..DISCONNECT COOLING FAN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR.THEN REMOVE THE COOLING FAN.REMOVE DISCONNECT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES GET READY TO CATCH TRANSMISSION FLUID THEN PLUG LINES. NOW UNSCREW THE FOUR BOLTS TWO ON EACH SIDE OF THE RADIATOR THAT ATTACH RADIATOR TO THE AIR CONDITIONER CONDENSOR CAREFULLY TIP TOP OF THE RADIATOR SLIGHTLY TOWARDS THE ENGINE.REMOVE THE UPPER RADIATOR SEAL AND LIFT RADIATOR FROM THE ENGINE.NOW IS THE TIME TO REPLACE THE UPPER AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSES WITH NEW ONES SINCE ALL COOLANT REMOVE I WOULD REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.NOW WHEN YOU GET READY TO INSTALL NEW RADIATOR USE SHEETS OF CARD BOARD PROTECT RADIATOR FINS AND CORES FROM DAMAGE WHILE SITTING RADIATOR BACK IN PLACE.ONCE YOU GET UPPER AND LOWER HOSES IN PLACE ALSO PLACE SMALL SURGE HOSES FROM THE OVER FLOW RESERVOIR TO RADIATOR NEW THERMOSTAT AND TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES ALL HOOK UP. There is a small hole in the back of the radiator reservior.


that small hole is a vent since the filler hole is capped
