If automatic - check first fluid level in the transmission - this usually suggest low fluid level.

check for leaks on both ends of transmission and around any joints on the transmission including corks, mounts and sensors. tighten up if necessary, change gaskets or seals if necessary. drain the fluid if you remove the pan and watch for little springs popping out...

start the car, run it for 15min at idle, shifting few times to gear and back to park. check fluid level while engine is running. add fluid as needed, add about half cup at a time, allow to run for 1 or 2min and check again for level repeat till you reach half mark. drive the car and check if gears engage, if so - check the fluid and add again if necessary.

if this do not solve the problem, service maybe required... instruction how to do that - exceed the scope of this little space. beside, you did not provided any info, in questions like that - manufacturer, model and year are helpful...

in manual - this suggest shifter or similar problem asking for money... and lots of it...

It's a 2000 Isuzu rodeo that will want shift in higher gears acts like it's in N shifts in to drive and reverse fine but want shift in higher gears


we cant guess your drive line, not now or ever.
so why ask. us?
my guess you mean the car drives in 1st gear but will not upshift,
and flares, in a false neutral.
wont and want is speed wrong 2 times, why?
Is car with TOD? torque on demand option, we cant see the dash board, we be like blind.
check fluild levels yet,
get the box serviced last decade, (a full flush and filter,) sure no.
check fuses, maybe car has TCM that cant up shift due to fuse blown.
and last did you scan it, if not why not
that be 3rd step after levels, fuses, then scan.
if the TCM cant see sensors, it cant upshift,
TCM is the tranny brain.

yes,you couldve blown the tranny,why use the front axle? is the rear blown?or did you think it was bad and it was actually the tranny?

Wont shift since ran out of gas


jeep ZJ 94.
no car runs, out of gas,,,, my dream do to this , has failed, 100 times.
HHO failed, and x,z,y.
even the match book cover, showing "turn water to fuel" fails.
im pulling your leg,

running out of fuel , likes to burn up fuel pumps.
they are fuel cooled and fuel lubricated. so dont do that. or $$$$$$$
after you ran it dry, the pump can fail, or have hard time priming.
long cranking to get the full system primed.
is engine running ok?, you failed to say that important fact...so.....
if engines ok?
does car go fast in 1st gear, fact 2 missing.....so...........???
wont shift can mean , tranny slips or wont go to 2nd, 3rd gear.???
which is it? slips? so skips?
or shifts late?
or shift too early.?

id reset the tranny TCM. (brain)

one way is to pull the battery neg cable for 5 min.
wait and put it back
all TCM have learn mode. so drive and teach it how you drive.
newer cars , 1trans, fists vast number of cars so it has an
even harder learn mode (not yours)

what gears hard shift, neutral to 1st. 2>3. which gear

hesitation is engine, issues. unless its flare.

is the engine hesitating? or is the tranny slipping.

does this happen hot engine, cold engine or both

what speeds?

does the transmission pass the stall tests in the FSM?

does the ditto the pump tests in the FSM>



the answer to your suck out quesions , sure, there is no limits on what any person can do , with the book in hand, ,.. zero limits.

and for sure we can not tell you , your limits.

read any FSM made on any car, see the ON CAR service.

read that,.

then see online, people going behond that.

on TCM based trans (A/T brains) we can drop the whole

valve body, tranny in car. and replace it or service it.



google soleniod valve body service.... or use google image

and see zillion photos of persons doing same



now let me back up.

why not post the full symptoms.>???? driving, shift , what it does good

and what it does bad. that forms a picture in our minds,

then we do the FSM checks. Pass or fail... stall test. pressure tests

etc.

if the tranny is slow to shift or stuck in a gear.

we first connect up our scan tool (USA OBD2 are my post only)

i scan it , hell with the CEL lamp i scan ever car first.

got Tranny codes have you,, didnt even look? P07xx >?????

The TCM in your car (tranny brain does ALL shifting)

so if the tranny dont shift right , then the 1st thing we do

is see if the BRAIN even did the shift.

yes, bad tranny (or some solenoid needs a suck out)

no, then the TCM is bad, or was lied too.

what does lied to mean, it means the TCM inputs are fibbing

the imput sensors are MALFING.

there are many inputs. most bad inputs throw DTC codes.



Think of this problem in 3 parts

1 the Gear box.

2 the TCM

3 the INPUTS.

the job on the on car mech. is to find which of the three are bad

the FSM covers that. very well. buyone.



since you did not post engine hot or cold, i cant answer.

on a cold engine (and in Alaska worse) the FAST idle is normal

as is all shifts. until such time and the idle goes to 800 rpm HOT.

N >1 shift.

ENGINE RPM is key, we watch that. to see if the trans is messing up

or the engine. (includes the stall test) ask.

-----check possible tps [throttle position sensor ]circuit for damage or faulty sensor----if good check the fuses and trans harness for shorts damage or disconnection,check o2 sensors wiring possible ground to exhaust ,or internal leak 2nd gear apply circuit[servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator] or poor pump pressure

Goes into neutral and then shifts hard into 1st on slowdown


It sounds like your input clutch seals are rolling. Is the check engine light on. It could also be the pressure control solenoid could be causing the problem aswell

what kind of vehical is this. SOME TIMES YOU CAN CHECK THE SHIFTING FORKS FROM THE TOP IF THE TRANNY IS A TOP LOADER.
YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE FLOOR MAT AND UNDER THIS YOU SHOULD SEE A FLOOR PAN WITH 6-8 BOLTS REMOVE THE PAN AND LIFT OUT OVER THE SHIFTER
UNDER THIS YOU WILL SEE THE TOP OF THE TRANNYWITH 4-6 BOLTSBUT THERE AGAIN IT DEPENDS ON THE MAKE OF VEHICAL
