Check the starter/solenoid. If you have a weak starter or solenoid, it could need the extra voltage put into your electrical system when doing a jump start.

I agree with shadowchb but, did you check the voltage of the new battery before you installed it? It may not have been charged fully to begin with and you still have the original problem of a charging problem. If this is the case, start the car by jump starting, carefully disconnect the donor battery and then put a dc voltmeter across the battery teminals of the battery in the car. It should read about 13.5 volts. Rev the car and you should see a small increase in voltage. If this does not happen look for a worn fanbelt or generator / alternator / voltage regulator problem. If you are getting the correct voltages look into the starter motor / starter solenoid senario as discussed earlier. Cheers

Bob, is right on it. I think your problem is in the alternator.

The car just clicks and doesn't start.

Hello,

You may need to drive the car back to where you bought the battery. You may have a faulty battery or faulty alternator. When the car is running it should be charging from about 13.8amps and above. If the battery is completely depleted, a jump pack will not be able to jump start the vehicle.

Hope that helps.

2002 Mazda tribute won't start but can jump, car will shut off while driving

you mentioned new alternator and battery, but it seem that the alternator is not charging, when you install the new battery the car started and run and after hours of running specially if head light is on the car shuts down. this is an indication that the alternator is not charging. (factory defect) have it checked or return part to auto supply.
if alternator is good and you have the car jumped and run it will not shut down even if your battery is dead because the charge of the alternator is enough to power the electrical system of the car until you turn it off. this applies to all cars

Battery was completely dead- so I just purchased a new one. The weather had been very cold with plenty of snow 0-25F. Did not attempt to start my car for about ten days but when I did the battery was...

That would probably be your alternator. The car doesnt take as much power to keep running as the lights. The lights use alot of power and if the battery is doing the alternators job it drains quickly. The battery is only designed to start the car then the alternator should take over and recharge the battery. When the alternator fails the battery will soon fail. Even though you had to jump the battery it was still new so it had a big charge. That is why you were able to drive so far. On an old battery and a jump I've seen people drive a long ways until they turn on their lights. I say 99.99% sure it's your alternator. Here is how you can test it. Get your car jump started again or charge your battery and start your car. While it is running get out and unhook the positive battery cable from the battery. If your car dies, you have found your problem(the alternator). I hope that I could be of some help. Good luck.

Brand new battery, won't start, will with jump.

It sounds like your alternator is not charging your battery properly. I would have that tested.

Car will not stay on after I JUMP START

Just try to keep the gas and drive for at leat 15 min HWY if possible. Yes, it will turn off if you let go the gas, but it will restart and stay on as long as you press on gas. Just keep on driving and the computer will readjust the emission inputs and will get back to normal.
