When does it need a new alternator?

The battery light goes on and off mostly on and the dealership says we need a new alternator. They just did major motor repair. Couldn't there just be a loose wire?

Hear is a simple way to tell if alternator is week start vehicle then remove the battery cables if it still runs alternator is good. But yes you could have a lose wire also. Good luck.

The only way to know this is to put a test meter on the alternator which most auto supply stores have you may have to remove it to have it tested thats where to start, you can have new brushes put in it which is cheaper than buying a new or rebuilt unit

The safest way to check the alternator is to start the engine an measure the battery voltage. anything between 13v and 15v is good but better if higher than 13v.

Follow the second answer, when charging the battery terminal voltage should be about 13.8, Chrysler most of the time ran a bit higher. Removing the battery terminal with the engine running can create what is called a load dump which can destroy just about anything electronic in the vehicle. There is protection for this but a lot of the protection schemes use moves which open up when worn out. There is no regulator per say in the vehicle, it is part of the ECM.

Could be just a need to reset the "check engine light", normally this is accomplished when the battery is disconnected for 15 minutes...If your Lebaron is now running smoothly, have the alternator battery tested for free at most auto parts stores for peace of mind. Auto Zone can also read the check engine light code for free. Tight belt, good tensioner pulley, good alternator, you should be in business. Most likely no harm done when the arc occurred.

No not the computer or wiring, when the battery goes out the alternator has to work harder. With a weak battery the alternator produces a magnetic flux the flux need to be disapated. Only a good battery can do that. All you bulbs took on at least 15vlts and are rated for 12(it can withstand 16vlts) the 2 lights on the dash any shop can do that or dealer

Hi:
I would definitely have your alternator checked out. The battery light means that the car is running off the battery, and not the alternator,. If you can or know someone who can remove it, most auto parts stores will check it out for free, and tell you if it is bad or good.

New alternator (actually 2 new) no charge

Find a friend with a heated garage that you can use first off, then locate the short that may be causing all this. Unless you have a bad battery? If its more than 3 years old, replace it. Batterys are cheap. WALMART has em under 89 bucks for most vehicles.

Battery light

1st thing to check would be the alternator, to make sure it's charging the battery. If it's not, the red battery light would come on. Most major parts stores offer free battery and charging system checks, they can tell you if the alternator is not charging. Have it checked asap, as the new battery will be dead soon if it's not being charged. countrycurt0

The alternator is not charging the battery. Has been replaced. Has ignition power. It's running directly off the battery.

To be sure, most major parts stores offer a free check of your battery and charging system. It must be a bad alternator, they can confirm that, and sell you one, or install it for you.countrycurt0
