Clean the inside of the throttle body and mas air flow sensor( if you have one). replace the air filter. Just a start. Tune up helps also.

Engine management light is on and driving slugish

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.

When the Check Engine light (or Service Engine Soon) is turned on, the systems computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible system faults (the gas cap is just one of them) that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen/Oriley and Autozone parts stores (USA only) do this testing for free.

Check engine light is on all the time and blinks after the engine runs sluggish for a little bit. Eventually it smooths out again but the light is continually lit.

HI, that pesky little light is yelling at you i need fixed. WHen this light is blinking it means that there is a problem sever enough to cause damage to the catalytic converters. This most likely due to a misfire condition. I would recommend you take int for service or at the very least stop by your local Auto Zone and have the Check the COdes sored in the computer, they do this free and then come back and see what they mean and what may need done.. Good luck

you sid that it will go off and the engine idle is good, it means the trouble is now cleared. the history of that problem came from electronic throttle control and the accelerator position sensor, if this happens again, just clean the throttle valve and inspect and clean the pedal sensor, change if necessary

This sounds like a restricted exhaust system, may have a clogged cat-converter,i would start by checking the exhaust system, and also check the engine for loose vacuum hoses

The transmission in your car is a GF4A-EL. The cooling capacity is weak. Many owners have installed auxillary coolers. Fluid should be changed every 2 yrs. or 30,000 miles. If you take your car to Advanced Auto or Autozone they will, for free, identify what code or codes are causing the check engine light to come on. More than likely you will have a P code that is pointing at the transmission. Any additional information is always usefull. Perhaps the transmission is overheating; If you plan on keeping the car I would suggest that you have an auxillary cooler installed. Also have the fluid changed. Let me know how you make out.

Check engine & TCS OFF are lit but the engine is still running.

Maybe the speed sensor beside the front passenger (right) wheel is dirty or is "out of service"... If this is the problem, the "cruise control" should fail too ; try it on the road...

Hope it will help you, even if my english isn't terrible...

Unfortunately the check engine light could be caused by hundreds of things and yet it could have something to do with your changing of the plugs. Do me a favor and take the car to your local auto parts store and they will check the code for the engine light for you for free. Bring that code back here and I will help you figure out what is causing the light and the slugish engine. Sorry for your problem but I'm sure I can help you get it fixed. Thanks for using FixYa!

The vehicle is a 1993 chevy cavalier 2.2 liter not a 1999what could be causing the engine being s

Many things can effect an engine during the cold.

I'd start by doing other basic tune up replacements. Such as an Air Filter, PCV valve, Fuel Filter, Oil Change. All things things keep an engine healthy.

Another thing to try is a bottle off fuel system cleaner. I recommend such brands as prestone, lucas oils, or STP. These will help eliminate deposits on the fuel system and help keep the fuel and air moving.

Did you replace the plugs with pregapped plugs? If your plugs aren't gapped right this could happen as well.

Hope these ideas help you out bud!
