This indicates that the clutch plate is not properly disengaged with he foot on the pedal
If it is hydraulic I would be checking for air in the system of faulty master cylinder
More costly problems may be oil grease on the clutch linings causing it to stick or drag, spigot bearing in the rear of the crank shaft seizing up, rust or dry grease and dust on the splines of the input shaft preventing the clutch plate from moving
All or any of these require a box removal to fix
if clutch is cable operated then the cable may be failing and stretched resulting in the clutch not disengaging properly

SOURCE: GEARBOX WONT GO INTO GEAR

hi from uk could you please give a little more info ? what make/model car ? has this problem occured suddenly? has car been layed up off road some time prior to this unable to select gears ? this problem sounds very much like the clutch drive plate is either stuck to flywheel hence question above ? or it is sticking on primary/spigot shaft for some reason and failing to disengage drive to g/box? how does clutch pedal feel ? you might try selecting 2nd gear with clutch fully pressed and h/brake on then try starting engine if engine starts ?runs then put slight revs on and slip clutch a few times this may work if plate is sticking? if you come back with update may be able to advise further

Please help.. my mini will not go in gear, i can force it into the higher gears with brutal force but have no chance getting it in 1st.. goes in all gears prrfect when engine is off

This is a sign of a clutch problem. You either need to have it adjusted, there is an adjustment screw for the clutch cable, at the firewall. Or you have the cable slipping on the bracket near the transmission itself. Or you actually have some slipping going on in your clutch assembly.

A reputable mechanic, can isolate the problem for you, and if he's honest, if it's only an adjustment that's required, he will do that for you, instead of saying you need to rebuild your clutch.

Clutch not engaging

Well, it would shift easily with engine off, because the transmission input shaft is not turning. Engine running and clutch engaging good, the input shaft would again be stationary and allow smooth shifting.
What you have to determine is if the clutch disc or pressure plate is bad (a new clutch is needed), or if the pedal hydraulic system has a malfunction. When you push the pedal down, a rod from the top of pedal pushes into the clutch master cylinder bolted to the firewall under the hood. This cylinder has a reservoir filled with brake fluid. When the rod forces fluid from the clutch master down a steel line and into the clutch slave cylinder down on the transmission bell housing, the hydraulic pressure forces a plunger from the slave cylinder to extend and push the clutch fork lever a small amount, enough to force the clutch release bearing (aka throw-out bearing) against the pressure plate. This relieves pressure on the clutch disc and input shaft becomes stationary for easy shifting.

Clutch Slipping

I suspect that the clutch is not the problem but the compression of the engine is low. When you say drives well there is little doubt that the clutch is working as required or else it would be slipping on take off and after changing gears the engine would rev up before the clutch engaged.. The jerking action would be the compression not being sufficient and the piston is going over tdc to the next piston and so on. By law you must apply the park brake as well

Sounds like your transmission has come to the end of its life. You can try getting the transmission flushed , and an additive I.E. No Slip added. That might cure some of the problems but obviously if its slipping the clutchs inside are worn out and transmission needs an overhaul.

Prelude 2.2 vti W reg auto automatic tiptronic gearbox slipping

Hi there. Although the Dealer has changed the oil, did they do a 'Stall Test' whilst the gearbox was cold and again when at normal running temperture? If not, that's what they must do firstly. This will identify whether you have a slipping clutch/s. The Honda autobox also includes what is known as accumulators - these control how each clutch is engaged during acceleration. For example, if you are accelerating slighly/smoothly, you want each gear to be engaged gently and smoothly, whereas, when accelerating hard, you need the gear engaged quickly and hard to aviod clutch slippage. Thus, the fact that you are experiencing a hard engagement might mean that an accumulator/s is seized. If that's the case, it will mean that the autobox will need stripping, cleaning and be checked for worn components. Hope this helps, Scottech.

moselecm, Audi's transmissions are known for very late clutch engagement, so that part is normal - they're built that way and are not adjustable. To be sure it is really slipping due to wear and not just unfamiliarity, put the car in fifth gear at about 30mph and FLOOR the gas. If it's going to slip, that's when it will slip.

As for the fluid, it shares a reservoir with the brake fluid reservoir - take a look there at the fluid - what you see in there will be the condition that both the brakes and clutch are operating under.
