If put in gear with engine off then start the car it edges forward
This is a sign of a clutch problem.
You either need to have it adjusted, there is an adjustment screw for the clutch cable, at the firewall.
Or you have the cable slipping on the bracket near the transmission itself.
Or you actually have some slipping going on in your clutch assembly.
A reputable mechanic, can isolate the problem for you, and if he's honest, if it's only an adjustment that's required, he will do that for you, instead of saying you need to rebuild your clutch.
