is your car equiped with immobilizer?

  • Charles Morare Apr 01, 2015

if is yes. Check immobilizer, i think there is a fuel cut off system . U can simply tress your fuel pipes if they are not have a cut off device.

  • Norm Rendfrey
    Norm Rendfrey Apr 01, 2015

my truck doesnt have a immobillizer the fuel pump has one line from tank to pump and the line to the carb ..i put the one line in a can of gas and it fills the bowl and it still cuts off it has a good spray its cuts off and it will start right up and dies.

Norn, sounds like a carb problem. If you have spark and the distributor cap isnt cracked( it can be cracked and you not see it)

  • Kevin J. Smith
    Kevin J. Smith Apr 23, 2015

and you continue to have spark when it turns over, then you probably have a float level problem in the carb.

Your distirbtur shaft gear is off by a tooth.
A fine engine that 350 # 1 cylinder is on the right side faceing the engine .Remove all of the plugs and bar the engine over from the bolt on the harmonic balancer.Put your finger into #1 plug hole when you feel pressure its comeing up on the compresstion stroke . Then take a small peice of solid wire and slide it in the plug hole ,Turn the balancer bolt until the wire stops moveing up then back off slightly .YOU ARE AT TOP DEAD CENTER NOW .
Look at the pisition of the rotor on the dist shaft in relation to the DIST CAP follow the plug wire back to # 1 cylinder and I think you will see its off .
You see the dist gear is a hex cut gear more like a worm gear and it rotates as it slides in to seat so what looks good before it drops into pisition is off when it seats

i have it on the compression stroke and when i did that the mark on the harmonic bal . was almost 2.5 inches from the tab and then i bar it towards the tab the piston was going down and when it got dark with a flash lite i could see that the rubber was sticking out where it had moved the hb is no good ,ive even pull the valve cover and the valves were closed so ihave a new harmonic bal and timing chain set to replace if iam going to replace one iam right there so ill pull the cover and do it all ,this way i can have the gears and dist. all lined up thank you

  • JOHN LAPIER Apr 02, 2015

I understand its dark the thing won't run your tired. However this isn't quit what you discribed the first time .If you have a peice of rubber stickimg out of the front of the crankshaft behind the horminic balance you can be sure its the front cover seal must be leaking like a sive. You didn't say this you forgot to say what engine or vehicle you have .The timeing chain or belt would explain a lot about why the thing is out of sink.and then you said it was a 1975 chevy 350.I'm tired to lots of luck with ti

  • Norm Rendfrey
    Norm Rendfrey Apr 02, 2015

the frist and main problem is it would start and run for a few seconds and cut off and you could start it right up and after i checked on the timing and saw where the timing mark was its was about 2.5 inches from the tab and it was on top dead centerand when i try to bring the line up the piston was started to go down so that was part two of the problem and the rubber on the harmonic bal is on the front side.

when its stall you try giving gas what does it do like slowly diiing or cut out right away if its slowly dieing its a gas problem if its cut out just like you turn the key off thats electrical

  • Norm Rendfrey
    Norm Rendfrey Apr 02, 2015

you start it and it runs for about a couple of seconds and cuts off and it will start right up and run 2-3 seconds and off.

  • pierre laplante Apr 02, 2015

if it cut off right away like you turn the key off its electrical when youchange your ignition module did you check the pick up coil and the coil install a spark tester on the distributor wire start it up when look if the spark cut out

  • Norm Rendfrey

Before replace the balancer and timing. Check it. Put #1 cylinder on top dead center of the compression stroke. Pull the cap and see where the rotor button is setting. It should point towards the #1 cylinder(drivers side front). If it does, then turn the truck on to the run position. Then check for voltage at the coil. No power, then look at the ignition switch or the wire from the switch to the fuse panel and coil. Could be the wire/s, most likely the ignition switch is old and tired.

ive checked the voltage and its 12.6 and i have it on top dead center pulled the valve cover and there closed and i noticed the mark on the harmonic was about 2.5 inches from the tab and noticed the harmonic bal. spin and thats why iam replacing that and chain and gears.

  • Randy Ohler Apr 26, 2015

If the timing was that far off, it wouldn't start. It would backfire or just spin. Put it back on TDC and check the position of the rotor button. It should be pointing at the #1 cylinder. The balancer could have slipped.

  • Randy Ohler Apr 26, 2015

Since it starts and shuts down, when you let off the key. The ignition switch cold be bad. You have power at start up to the coils, but no power to the coils in the run position.

That type of starter uses a s and I terminal on the starter solenoid. If the car runs during cranking most likely your issue is a loose wire or faulty ignition switch to test use a jumper wire to jump from battery positive to the positive post on the ignition coil. if the car stays running, then replace the ignition switch.

There is a resistor mounted on the firewall that boosts the spark for starting. After the engine starts it drops back to run voltage. When the run portion fails the engine will start an die immediately. Connect the two wires and it will run on the high voltage for a very temporary fix.

My van wont start no fuel or spark ?

Sounds like it could be the ignition module in the distributor. You have a throttle body instead of a carb. The injectors get a ground signal from the engine computer when they are supposed to open. The ignition module takes a signal from the pickup coil in the bottom of the distributor and decides when to fire the plugs and also the injectors.
If the injectors and the coil has power, it could be the module or the pickup coil.

My '99 chevy truck with 5,7L 350 will start but wont stay running. put new fuel pump and relay switch in

First you must determine if the fuel is stopping or the spark is stopping..If the fuel is stopping this could be a computer problem.. If the spark is stopping then it could be the IGN Module in the distributer. or any nomber of sensors. Squirt a little fuel directly into the Throttle body on the intake manifold.. If the truck runs longer its probably loss of fuel.. Do this several times to make sure, be careful and only use a small amounty of fuel.. you do not want a fire.. RE: Spark: Take a plug wire and an old plug..put the wire on the plug.. hold the plug against a good ground .. have someone crank the engine .. does the plug stop firing? The engine dies.. and will not restart for a minuet or so.. during this "no start" time do the plug test. If the plug will not fire during this time take the module out and take it to Orillys Auto parts.. They can test it.. really expensive part. Don't replace until you know it is BAD..

I have a 91 s-10 that wont run...fuel pump runs and I am getting fuel to the carb all brand new plugs and wires and ignition coil and module and new cap and rotor? fires up and dies out?

The fuel pump relay is at fault. The engine will start running off the oil pressure sensor for the 3rd wire connected to the sensor feeds power to the fuel pump which makes your truck start right up. When the engine achomplish the standard oil pressure as needed the sensor shuts power off by the PCM default system and turns on the fuel pump relay to continue working the fuel pump. replace the relay and you will be driving around again

I have a 1988 chevy truck and it will not start now, i shorted out the starter and it burned the negative cable wire so i unhooked it and replaced the starter solenoid and replaced the egnition module,...

Is the engine turning over and just not starting? Go back to basics, you need fuel, fire, compression, and proper timing to get it to start. Check the fuel pump, do you hear it run when you turn the key on? Do you have fuel pressure, if so check for spark at the spark plugs, if you have spark try turning the engine over and have a buddy spray some starting fluid in the throttle body, if it tries to start then you have a fuel problem. If no fire check dist module, ign coil and coil wire.

I have a 90 chevy k1500 350 tbi with same problem! I have traced problem to... after turning on key fuel pump kicks on when u crank it over injectors shoot gas and truck starts! After few seconds injectors stop spraying and truck dies! This can happen many times over and over! Eventually sometimes truck stays running and all is great! I changed ignition module, oil pressure sending unit (which i was told controls gas after vehicle is running) fuel filter, computer, fuel pump relay, I am at a loss now! Hope this helps and hope someone can help me!

2002 ford taurus won't start at first crank in the morning

remove the air filter housing from the throttle body, or if its mult-ported injection, remove the large air duct. Do this the night before. The next day, before cranking and having a spray can of carb. cleaner, spray a couple of shots of carb cleaner either into the large air duct, spray towards the engine, or if its single body injection, spray directly on to the throttle body.

Crank engine immediately, preferrably have some one else sitting in the car to start it after you spray.

If the car even tries to start, replace cold start relay.
