2008 Dodge Caliber sxt 2.0 with cvt transmission, electronic throttle control light flashing, car has very rough idling and will only drive in limp mode. No check engine light on either
I was driving home and i did hit a pothole, but while I was driving the electronic throttle control light started to blink and then turned off. I parked the car, and took out the driver's manual and reset it but then once I started the car again the car ran rough, like the engine is sputtering while idling, also I pressed down on the gas but the car's tachometer only went up to the number 2 and the car could only go about 5-10 mph with the d option on the shifter. So I switched it to autostick mode and I was shifting gears but the car would only do between 10-20 mph. This is the limp mode that all chrysler, dodges, and plymouths do.
I was able to get home but at every red light or stop sign the car sputters hard and then when I am pressing the brakes to slow down the car gets jerky movements.
I have looked up on dodge forums and it seems like this is a common issue, but when I bought the car and I also just checked the dodge recall website everything is up to date.
It could be anything from a snapped handbrake cable to a speed sensor to a throttle position sensor or a loose vacuum hose. I am not sure what it would be. I will be going to dealership soon to get it looked at.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Get a can or two of carb & choke or intake cleaner. Take the intake boot off at the throttle, and clean it thoroughly. It miught help to use a small brush (like an old toothbrush) or some paper towels to help wip it out
Hi, I had a 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT with that crappy transmission in it, I had the same problem at or around approx. 60,000 miles. When I first purchased it the transmission was seamless through the ratios, after a while I noticed a hesitation lets say from first to second gear, and it kept getting worse and I felt it through most "gears". I also lost a lot of power and got worse fuel mileage. I asked my mechanic and he told me to take it to the dealer because of the type of transmission in it. Well they told me that I needed it flushed ($280 later) and it didn't work, it made it worse. I went online and did some research on it and found that there are many people with the same problem, the Chrysler corporation knows about it but doesn't want to issue a recall because it would cost too much to replace the transmissions in all cars sold. The actual problem with mine was the transmission control module which costs roughly around $1,000 to replace and shortly after that the transmission fails and that is approx. $6,000-$7,000 to replace that.
The 2008 Dodge Caliber is versatile and has some unique features, but a low-quality cabin and underwhelming performance keep this model near the bottom of the small wagon list. Pros: Versatile interior, available all-wheel drive, wide range of engine choices. Cons: Sluggish acceleration from CVT-equipped models, low-quality interior materials, unimpressive build quality, several important safety features are optional rather than standard.------------------------------------------vas 5054a
Had the same overheating issue with mine @ 213,000 miles. I had had the fluid changed out by the dealer and the system flushed at 105,000. . . This time I did it myself, $ 142.00 for 2 gallons of cvt tran fluid from dealer, gasket & new filter from Summit racing (23.00). . . ****** take 7.50 qts. once drained ! Cur runs great now !
I had the same thing happen to me about a week ago and it was the Electronic Throttle Control. It will stick due to carbon build up. Car was towed to the Dodge garage and ETC replace and carbon cleaned out. Cost me $658.00. Yep that's a hefty price to pay but so far no other problems.
You'll notice what appears to be a dipstick tube at the front of the vehicle on the drivers side, and it should have a warning label to use CVT oil. But when you remove the top, there's no stick. The dipstick itself is a "special tool" (Miller No. 9336). The stick is marked for fluid levels for different temperatures, although there is an acceptable range. Read the instructions carefuly that come with the tool
