I have 2005 montero 3.8 and is overheatting we change the water pump, clean the radiator, replaces all houses and the problem continue. so if some body tell me what else we have to do.?

Egine overheats


You did not mention the Thermostat which controls the temperature of the engine. Did you mean the Thermostat when you said temp sensor? If not, then change the thermostat.

Check engine comes in when engine starts to overheat, which it does in slow traffic. Radiator, fans, water pump are OK.


Did you check/replace the thermostat? Another possible cause may be hair line cracks in the head(s).

Hi Kim,

I can feel your frustration. It sounds like you've done all the logical stuff already. The "donut hole" in your process would seem to be not changing the water pump. The water pump as you might imagine, is responsible for circulating (pumping) the relatively cool water in the radiator into the running engine that contains the hot water. Hoses connect the two together. A thermostat is between the radiator and the engine. Once the water in the running engine gets to a certain temperature, the thermostat opens allowing the water pump to send cool water into the engine and hot water out to the radiator to be cooled. The heater core is usually on the passenger side firewall area.

It sounds like the water pump is the only thing left to change - if it isn't working - it can't circulate the water - and will result in overheating. Lastly, a clogged heater core shouldn't cause the engine to overheat - in fact, if the engine begins to overheat, you should turn the heat to HIGH fan and HIGH temperature to help remove some of the heat in the coolant.

does the upper and lower hoses seem to be the same temp when car begins to overheat? ore the radiator cooling fans coming on before the car overheats? did you pressure test the cooling system and radiator cap? also may want to remove the lower hose and flush the radiator. is the check engine light on and does it run bad?

My car is rumming hot and the antifreeze is leaking I'm thinking it's my water pump


It could be the water pump , or something else , like a faulty thermostat. Where is the coolant leaking from ? If it is leaking from the water pump , then yes , your pump might be toast.
If the thermostat is no good , the engine will warm up to normal temp , and then overheat quite quickly. As it overheats and the coolant expands and boils , it could back up into the overflow reservoir and leak out onto the ground. You need to get someone to diagnose the problem ASAP , running your engine in an overheat condition could very quickly blow your head gasket and/or warp a cylinder head. If you can , please post a bit more info. Does it run but at a higher than normal temp. Does it only overheat when stopped in traffic etc.
Could be water pump , or thermostat , or plugged up radiator , or nonfunctioning cooling fans.

98 dodge caravan overheating...heater works..checked fans they came on later but when I drove it after it cooled down and it overheated...check engine lite came on.


About the only things are the thermostat and the water pump.There could be something with the radiator but that is the rarest because the water shoots straight through.If it overheats fairly rapid,it's most likely the thermostat.Sometimes a water pump will let you go 20-30 miles before overheat.The thermostat is cheaper and easier if you're going to try it systematically.Overheat will probably cause the check engine light too.Good luck! MY CONTOUR IS OVER HEATING


Most people think of this is a common problem of the thermostat. To make sure it is not the only problem, run your car a day or two without the thermostat to make sure it is not overheating anymore, then put in a new thermostat. Your problem is solved.
However, if your engine still has overheat without the thermostat, then there is a problem with restriction of coolant circulation through the engine from 3 followings:
1- Radiator clogged up.
2- Water pump is bad.
3- Water jacket is clogged up.
A shop can easily determine if the water pum bad or not.
Make sure to find a reputation shop since a yo-yo shop can change your water pump first then later on determine the clogged up radiator is the culprit while you are not actually needing a water pump at the first place. Why, a good water pump still causes overheat since the radiator is clogging up. My advise is not to use a rebuilt radiator, go with a brand new one. It can last you 10 years instead of 2 years on the rebuilt one. Good luck.

Car is overheating, thermostat was changed and the radiator was flushed, car does not overheat while idoling, but when you start driving it overheats


It sounds like water pump may be your problem. It circulates a 50/50 mixture of glycol (or some form of) and water through the engine block and cylinder head and back through the radiator. In the radiator the mixture is cooled when air passes over the fins of the radiator. This is accomplished by driving or a mechanical/electrical fan when stationary. The water pump also circulates the mixture through the heater core giving the car heat. If the water pump is not circulating the water back to the radiator to cool, it will overheat. More heat is caused by the engine when driving (much less heat when idling), hence the overheating while driving.
