Question about 2003 Dodge Neon

2 Answers

Speedometer behaves erratically (needles shoots down to 0) and forces transmission into limp in mode while driving.

Sometimes the speedo works correctly but never consistently. Check engine light goes on and off. The car has had the instrument cluster and PCM itself replaced within the last year as well as having had the trans input and output sensors replaced - but still no resolution to this problem. What could possibly be the issue?

The output speed sensor is going bad,or may have a broken wire on the connector.repair r the wire if so,or replace the sensor.Transmission goes into limp mode to protect it'self, and engine, from internal damage. repair this, and you should be good

Still sounds like a bad output speed sensor - check scan the TCM for codes and see what you get. Also check the wiring at and near the output speed sensor connector.

SOURCE: 0700 codes after replacing speed sensors

Hi there:DTC P0700 is a generic warning code that advice about a transmission fault specific code stored there. In this case, your addicional specifi code is P0740.
DTC P0740 - Torque Converter Clutch control circuit (A/T Torque Converter Clutch - No RPM Drop At Lockup)

This can be caused from as little as a blown fuse or bad ground to a bad valve body in the transmission. I would suggest a transmission shop to further diagnose since there are pressures that need checked and circuits that will need checked with diagnostic equipment. Here is a description and the testing procedure for DTC P0740. Keep in mind that there is a good chance the trans will need rebuilt.

Possible Causes:

Internal transmission component fault (Input or Reaction shaft) Internal transmission leakage (valve body leaking or seal rings) Converter clutch valve or clutch timing valve is sticking TCC assembly has failed.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Replaced input and output speed sensors for erratic speedometer. Now the speedometer remains at 0. Anyone have a suggestion on what else could be wrong?

input and out put speed sensors tell the TCM and the ECM the difference between engine rpms and transmission input roms so that the correct gear ratio can be selected
A speedo sensor reads the out put shaft (drive line ) shaft and refers to road speed for speed and odometer readings and to calculate the fuel consumption rate
it is possible that you have replaced the wrong sensor
Talk with an accredited transmission specialist shop and have the problem diagnosed

Why is the speedometer reading erratically?

Depending on the type an year vehicle an the electronics on the car , the instrument cluster could be at fault ! The stepper motor that moves the speedo could be the problem if a GM product ! As far as the speed sensor goes a few other things wouldn't work very well if it were bad an the check engine light would be on more then likely because this is an input to the PCM - engine computer ! The transmission would shift erratically !
Speedometer
The IPC displays the vehicle speed based on the vehicle speed signal from the PCM. The PCM converts the data from the vehicle speed sensor to a 4000 pulses/mile signal. The IPC uses the vehicle speed signal circuit from the PCM in order to calculate the vehicle speed. The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) if a malfunction in the vehicle speed signal circuit exists.
So I would say the instrument cluster is bad !

Is it possible for part of the vss buffer to work, but not the other outputs? Speedo works fine, but tranny sometimes shifts into 'limp mode' and will not upshift.

GOOD discriptoin but its tough to say .
Your not getting codes sometimes you don't if its not that big of a problem YET.
But it sounds like you may be heading for one.
May best guess is their is an internal valve that isn't working correctly or mabey a clogged filter .But it sounds like it can be fixed with out to much expence if you do it now
Take it to a transmission shop before its to late

The symptoms you describe point to a loose or cracked speedometer cable. The cable likely needs to be replaced.

While driving down the road on the highway in my 1997 Mercury Sable, the speedometer starts to fluxuate and then the transmission drops down to what seems like 1st gear, engine races. Sometimes when I put...

Of course the first thing to do is to check the transmission fluid level. Next have car scanned for codes, if there is a speed sensor malfunctioning, the transmission would go into limp mode. In limp mode, only reverse and second gear work. Many auto parts stores will scan your car for free. I hope this helps.

96 volvo 850 speedometer somtimes works then it drops to 0

Two questions: Is your odometer working? If not then it's probably a broken gear by the stepper motor that Emissionwiz mentioned. Is your ABS and/or TRACS light on intermittently or constantly. If so that is a common sign your ABS control module has gone or is going bad. This usually happens before the speedometer starts acting up. Either one of these will start intermittently and finally end up with the speedometer not functioning at all, and both are pretty common failures with this model.

Speedometer works somestimes

it is the gear in your speedo cable and the cable is not hard to change it normally goes to your front wheel back to your transmission put the truck on ramps put a stop or something behind the rear wheel and then you will see what i am talking about.
