SOURCE: Clutch problem

check the fluid level first, if its empty this will happen, if so full it and bleed the clutch, if not it could be the slave cylinder and failing both, it could be the clutch itself, easiest way to check is to see on the gearbox if the clutch is engaging when you press the pedal down.
just ask if you need more help

SOURCE: 1988 Nissan Pickup Clutch problem?

The fork in the tranmission could have got stuck and there is also two bleeds on that system you have to bleed the one on the tranmision first then the one on the master cylinder. It could posible a clutch problem but not really sounding that way.

SOURCE: nissan clutch problem

If your not able to shift into any gear that means your clutch is not engage/disengaging. Check for fluid leaks, you said topped off and fluid levels were low? It sounds like you have a Slave cylinder or master cylinder leak, if its leaking its bet to replace both.

Clutch is smoking

Depending on how old it is, I would say it has broken apart.
You won't really know until you pull the trans.

1990 nissan pickup will not stsrt untille preeing the clutch interlock switch on dash, then start up.

try pressing the clutch pedal down at different heights and see if it will start, if so then you will need to adjust the linkages to the clutch pedal. if it still won't start, then you will need to replace the neutral safety switch.

Clutch does not slip but when clutch pedal is pressed down does not let clutch release. how much travel should the slave cylinder have and is there any adjustments i can try.

Since your clutch is operated by hydraulic pressure, there is no adjustment. If pushing in the clutch pedal doesn't release the clutch, then the most common cause is either air in the system or the master or slave has failed. If the clutch is the original factory one then it is possible that the clutch itself has worn.

Gears

Could be the clutch is wearing down.If it's in ALL gears,it is likely the clutch. If i remember correctly, your car has a hydraulically activated clutch. If this is the case, under the dash, where the clutch pedal attaches to the clutch master cylinder, there is a jam nut, either 12mm or 14 mm wrench, loosen the jamnut, and spin the threded rod in,towards the clutch pedal, and away from the firewall. This should make your clutch pedal engagement point closer to the floor, and easier to shift.
