No brakes on a 1986 honda accord


Did you get a good bleed with fluid coming out at all four wheels? If they bled good, and the pedal still goes to the floor, you need to check the brake master cylinder-it is probably shot with an internal leak. An internal leak will not let fluid pressure build up, so no brakes.

Did you keep the brake fluid reservoir from going dry while bleeding? If it went real low, air might have got back into the lines.

It is not uncommon when bleeding brakes on an older vehicle for the master cylinder to suddenly develop an internal leak and require replacement . Here's why: pushing the pedal all the way to the floor causes the master's piston to push in farther than ever before. The rubber cups then travel over a section of the cylinder not usually touched by the cups-old fluid can develop a crud there and when the piston pushes over it, the cups can get ruined. To avoid this when bleeding brakes, put a short piece of 2X4 wood block under the pedal. Then the pedal will not extend the master's piston beyond it's normal travel. Of course on a new master cylinder, you do not have to do this. A new master cylinder does require bench bleeding before installing, however, to ensure no air pockets develop from there.

Either your Brake Master Cylinder or your Slave Cylinder has failed. The brake fluid is internally leaking past the piston cups. First remove the rubber boot from the Master Cylinder where it comes through the firewall under the dashboard. If the insides of the boot contain brake fluid, the Master Cylinder has failed. If the boot is dry, then your Slave Cylinder has failed.

Check for restrictions in the brake line, it may allow fluid pressure to reach the wheel cylinder but not return easily enough to let the wheel cylinder retract fully. The rubber boots, no that would not cause this. Is you don't say what wheel front of rear, makes a big difference.

Losing brake fluid with no leak


It's a sealed system, so it's got to be going somewhere, leaking somewhere (or boiling off from severe braking operations over and over). Since you likely haven't experienced extreme braking, it must be leaking somewhere.
You will have to trace all your brake lines from the master cylinder to each wheel to check for any sign of leaking. Front calipers are easy to spot leaks when they leak. If you have drum brakes on the rear, you may need to pull off the drum to check the wheel brake cylinders. Peel back the rubber boot on each end of the wheel cylinder and look for any fluid leaks there.
Another place to check is at the back of the master cylinder. If a seal is bad there, it has been known to leak fluid inside the car, under the dash. Feel around the carpet under and behind the brake pedal for any wetness. If you find brake fluid there, you will need the master cylinder replaced or rebuilt.
Hope you find the problem. Don't forget to check the ABS system and brake lines, too.

Did you bleed all of the air out of the lines? Is there a leak anywhere? Check your calipers, look around the caliper piston and make sure there is no fluid coming out of the boot. If you have drum brakes on the rear check to make sure the wheel cylinders aren't leaking. Also check all of your brake hoses.

Leaking brake fluid at the clutch pedal?


You have a leaky clutch master cylinder, or a leaky brake master cylinder.

The fix to to find out which one is leaking and to replace it. The new fluid will need bleeding out at the slave cylinder, but first pull back the rubber boot on the end of the slave cylinder (assuming it's the clutch). If there is fluid there as well, the the slave cylinder must also be replaced. if it's the break master cylinder, then you'll need to check the seals on the rear wheel brake cylinders and the front wheel caliper pistons. If any leak, they must be replaced.

If you're an experienced mechanic (your question suggests not) then you may be able to dismantle, assess, and if appropriate rebuild any leaky parts using new seals/pistons. The parts are usually cheap, but the very high labour costs and higher chances of a post-repair fault mean that most garages just replace the entire assembly with new and guaranteed parts as it's far quicker, easier and less likely to come back for remedial work.

I have a1997 plymouth grand voyager and it has been leaking brake fluid that is showing on the back rim what is causing the leak is it the brake cylinder or the brake line


Hi, the problem is usually the brake wheel cylinder inside. Put the car in park but do not set the brake. Jack up the wheel and remove the wheel and drum. At the top of the hub assembly you will see a cylinder between the tops of the shoes with rubber boots on each side. If fluid leaks out when you pull back the edge of either boot, the cylinder is leaking and must be replaced.
Purchase a new cylinder and also some brake fluid if you don't have any on hand. Check your reservoir. Hopefully it is not empty, or you would have drawn air into the system. Fill up the reservoir before replacing the wheel cylinder.
To replace, use a vice grip plier to remove the return spring that holds the shoe tops together, then pull the shoe tops away from the cylinder. Place something under the hub to catch the fluid that will leak during the replacement.
Loosen the hydraulic fitting on the back of the hub using a line wrench of the correct size, then remove the 2 bolts holding the cylinder to the hub (see picture below). Have the new cylinder handy and disconnect the line from the old cylinder. Quickly remove the old cylinder and put in the new one. Screw the line fitting on finger tight and then replace the bolts. Replace the return spring between the shoes. Tighten the line and open the bleeder valve above the fitting about one turn. The line may gravity bleed the air out. Give it a few minutes. If clear fluid starts to leak out and no bubbles, tighten the bleeder and reassemble the wheel. If it does not gravity bleed, replace the drum and have someone assist with a pressure bleed. With the bleeder closed, have the assistant pump the brake pedal and then hold it down while you open and close the bleeder. They should not let up on the pedal until you have closed the bleeder. repeat this process of ejecting air and fluid until only fluid comes out. Then replace the wheel and let the car down.

Brake fluid is expelled from the top cover of master cylinder when brake pedal is depressed why?


Brake fluid from the Master Cylinder leaks if the Master Cylinder is leaking itself otherwise the leak is somewhere else, have some one check this out, it could be anywhere and you should have seen some drops on the floor by now.

Sounds like a "stuck" caliper piston. Many Chrysler products (by example) used "phenolic" pistons in the calipers which were notorious for seizing in the caliper. Replacement pistons are usually made of steel. With the piston seized heat builds up and ruins the seals in the caliper.

You could have a blown master cylinder that is leaking from the back and into the booster area. Take the cylinder loose from the booster and see if there is fluid in that cavity. Sounds like a massive leak. Look at the rubber hoses and metal lines. The reason you cannot pump up the brakes is because the leak is allowing air to re-enter the system so that pressure cannot build up.

Experienceing loss of power to brakes


1. What is the Brake Fluid Level?
2. Are you losing any Brake fluid at all? Are there any puddles or noticeable wetness on the ground or on the tires/wheels? With vehicle parked, the reservoir filled (overfilled), and engine running: pump the brakes and check on the ground and back sides (inside portions) of the wheels. Look for any brake fluid leaks.
3. Leaks from Calipers usually means a leak from the caliper piston. The rubber seals will be wet.
Leaks from Drums usually means a leak from the wheel cylinder.
4. In any case of leaks from the wheels - replace the calliper OR wheel cylinder.
For caliper leaks: change the brake pads, and clean the rotors with brake cleaner.
For drum leaks: clean the drum and brake hardware with brake cleaner, and replace the shoes.
5. If no leak is detected from the wheel area's: check under the Master Cylinder for wetness indicating a possible leak.
6. If no leak can be found: you MAY have a rear seal leak in the Master Cylinder which is pumping Brake Fluid into the Brake Booster (that large disk looking thing attached to the fire wall, attached to the Master Cylinder in front).
a. Use a large drip/catch pan under the Van in the area on the Master Cylinder.
b. Disconnect the brake lines from the Master Cylinder using a flair wrench.
c. Remove the two nuts (12 or 13mm?) attaching the Master Cylinder to the Brake Booster. If you have been using a lot of fluid, and have found no leaks, here is a good possibilty that all that brake fluid has collected in the Booster; so when you detach the Master Cylinder from the Brake Booster, all that fluid will come rushing out!
7. If there is Brake Fluid inside the Brake Booster: there is no cleaning that out. Brake Fluid is very caustic to the seals inside the Booster and should be replaced.
8. Of course the Master Cylinder will also have to be replaced.
9. After replacing the Master Cylinder/Brake Booster - make sure you get all that spilled brake fluid off the engine compartment area parts! I use a brake cleaner, then mild soap and then water to rinse. Clean any Brake Fluid off Paint imediatley as it will quickly dissolves finishes and paint.
10. If no leak is detected and the Booster is clear, there may be problems with the Booster One-Way Valve. This is attached to the outside of the Booster and has a hose from an "advance" connected to it. This maybe malfunctioning where you are losing power. Replace this first before deciding to replace the whole booster (in cases of NON-LEAKS ONLY). If that did not work, there may be inner seals inside the Booster that have failed. That means a new Booster.
11. In any of the above cases: Make sure you bleed the Master Cylinder correctly and bleed the brakes (at each affected wheel) correctly. Any air in the brake lines will decrease your braking proficiency or could result in brake failure.

Master cylinder needs replacing. Dealer told me fluid is leaking and making the traction light come on. Is this true?


if your fluid leak is around brake caliper or wheel cylinder fluid will leak on brake drum or rotor.causing wheel slippage.which will cause traction light to come on.check all four wheels brake calipers and wheel cylinders.look for signs of leaking around the seal area.
