All ways follow instructions in the drivers manual, damage can be caused by to light or to heave a oil . brand not important as long as specs are the same.

Twice I have been rip off by shady mechanics how do I know or where can I check what weight am I going to need for my 2007 Lexus where can I get that information so next time I get my oil change I won't...

the oil specifications are in the user hand book in the car
that section will give you the viscosity for the ambient temperature you are operating in but it is for new cars only
as the engine is 10 years old , if the specs say 5w-15 go up to 10w 30 grade
the heavier grade will not damage the engine but a grade that is too light will
select only accredited service centers where the mechanics are trained on the job
If you do not have the user book, google--oil specifications for lexus ( model , ) 2007--- and read what the specifications are

I have a very simple question. I have a 1990 Nissan Hardbody 5-speed and I need to know what kind of oil would be best to use. Like 10w-30, 10w-40, etc. Thanks for your time.

With any multi viscosity oils the first # represent the viscosity(thickness) at start up temp. The second # represents the viscosity at operating temp. The smaller the # the less the viscosity. So a 10w30 starts at a 10 weight and turns into a 30 weight. The 10w40 starts at a 10 weight and turns into a 40 weight. the w stand for winter. Most people use multi viscosity oils. While some don't likel them they opt to use a SAE30 (straight 30). It is 30 weight all the time. But in most areas in the U.S you should use a multi viscosity oil

Is there any way to help burning oil oil without overhaul ?

No, not really. You can move up to a slightly heavier weight oil and it may or may not help. If you normally use 5w30 move to 10w40. In the end you will find there is no magic cure.

What type of oil do I need for winter?

Use the manufacturer's recommended weight. Unless you're in an extremely cold area there is no reason to use a lighter weight than is recommended.

What weight oil do I use

Usually the recommended oil is marked on the filler cap, also look in the owners manual. Most modern cars use 5W-30.
