Question about 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Glass lift gate keeps opening while underway. can close it and you can hear the mechanism unlocking and releasing latch.

Get it serviced?
if not able to do that, find out if the problem is mech. or electric.?
do you know how to do that.? (seems elect, due to heard motor actions.?)
well disconnect the wire to the latch, and if the problem goes away it s mechanical.
if elecrical it can be bad wiring or switch that controls this latch. or the relays.
lets look at the WK jeep book.
the liftgate has 4 wires (so does the lock for door there)
2 for the motor
2 for the switch status. (tells you on dash light , gate unlocked)
so of the motor runs by itself that means, the controls to said motor are faulting.
easy huh, ?
door lock or flip up glass.?l my guess its flip glass....faulting...
both have motors.
the flip up glass has 2 relays that can fail.
pull 1 to see if the problem ends (self actuated errors)
the cluster controller (brain) controls this relay flip glass motor.
if the inputs to the controller are wrong (like all computers) the outputs will fail.
the glass relays, run in a pair.
one sends ground to the flip up glass lock
other sends 12vdc on command,
and the reverse !(motor runs backwards too)
did you scan the PCM yet, to see if there is a DTC errors, logged? for Gate?
inputs to the cluster are wrong for flip glass.?>
that be first. SCAN first , always, !!!
here is the:
flip glass. schematic
does this help?
as you can see if the lower coil wire above in relay grounds out
shorts to body, the glass latch operates , in error.
so if you pull the relay, and it stops you know the relay is bad
or the coil is being driven. wrongly.
in this photo the center box is the cluster brain. (processor)
if intermittent the problem can be very hard to find. as all intermittent are.
id scan it while driving, to see if i get DTC errors at the moment of failure.
drive with relay pulled. (gone now) sure it is.
the motor can not self actuate, that is it cant sources its own power and ground to do that.
the relay must close. (or be bad or be energized wrongly)

Well My 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problem and we had to just cut into the lift gate panel from the inside. It required cutting plastic but with a 94 looks arent everything and a working lift gate was worth it. But then we pealed back this black plastic mat under the panel and lifted up on the release bar(verticle bar that lifts the latch) and once we got it open we adjusted a little clamp that had slipped. Dont adjust it too much or when u lock it it wont lock! But sorry i dont know the name of the parts. But then u can screw the panel back in and it wont look to bad besides some cuts.

thats kinda 2 things.. lol... but the back pass door.. your actuator in the latch could be bad or someone that used a slimjim to unlock the car on that door bent the rod.. does it move at all when you hit the power lock button ? if it moves some that it could very well be a bent rod.. or the actuator is stuck and needs to be replaced..
