Unlike the issues others have with the glass lift gate not opening, my lift gate keeps opening without using the remote. You can hear the latch unlock electrically. The lift gate doesn't leak or stick closed. When it is open, there is a message on the display and the interior lights come on. I think there is a problem with the electric selonoid that keeps unlocking.

There are times it will unlock and open. I will close it and before I get into the drivers seat it opens again. You can literally hear the switch unlocking repeatedly. This particular Grand Cherokee I bought used. There are several electrical issues with it The rains sensor doesn't work properly, the nav/radio doesn't work, and the warning for air bag comes up at times. Other than that, I love the Overland, but it is a task to put up with these electrical issues. I have disconnected the battery and allowed the computer to reboot and it changes nothing.

I had this problem with my gc wk and it was the button that operates the liftgate. I took the button apart and cleaned the contacts and problem solved, works perfectly now!

Get it serviced?
if not able to do that, find out if the problem is mech. or electric.?
do you know how to do that.? (seems elect, due to heard motor actions.?)
well disconnect the wire to the latch, and if the problem goes away it s mechanical.
if elecrical it can be bad wiring or switch that controls this latch. or the relays.
wk jeep.
lets look at the WK jeep book.
the liftgate has 4 wires (so does the lock for door there)
2 for the motor
2 for the switch status. (tells you on dash light , gate unlocked)

so of the motor runs by itself that means, the controls to said motor are faulting.
easy huh, ?

door lock or flip up glass.?l my guess its flip glass....faulting...
both have motors.
the flip up glass has 2 relays that can fail.
pull 1 to see if the problem ends (self actuated errors)
the cluster controller (brain) controls this relay flip glass motor.
if the inputs to the controller are wrong (like all computers) the outputs will fail.

the glass relays, run in a pair.
one sends ground to the flip up glass lock
other sends 12vdc on command,
and the reverse !(motor runs backwards too)
did you scan the PCM yet, to see if there is a DTC errors, logged? for Gate?
inputs to the cluster are wrong for flip glass.?>
that be first. SCAN first , always, !!!
here is the:
flip glass. schematic

glass liftgate on a 2006 grand cherokee overland k - 25617971-zexdix4ype2rblnlnmext1up-1-0.jpgdoes this help?

as you can see if the lower coil wire above in relay grounds out
shorts to body, the glass latch operates , in error.
so if you pull the relay, and it stops you know the relay is bad
or the coil is being driven. wrongly.
in this photo the center box is the cluster brain. (processor)

if intermittent the problem can be very hard to find. as all intermittent are.
id scan it while driving, to see if i get DTC errors at the moment of failure.
drive with relay pulled. (gone now) sure it is.
the motor can not self actuate, that is it cant sources its own power and ground to do that.
the relay must close. (or be bad or be energized wrongly)

SOURCE: 1994 Jeep Grand cherokee rear lift gate

Well My 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the same problem and we had to just cut into the lift gate panel from the inside. It required cutting plastic but with a 94 looks arent everything and a working lift gate was worth it. But then we pealed back this black plastic mat under the panel and lifted up on the release bar(verticle bar that lifts the latch) and once we got it open we adjusted a little clamp that had slipped. Dont adjust it too much or when u lock it it wont lock! But sorry i dont know the name of the parts. But then u can screw the panel back in and it wont look to bad besides some cuts.

thats kinda 2 things.. lol... but the back pass door.. your actuator in the latch could be bad or someone that used a slimjim to unlock the car on that door bent the rod.. does it move at all when you hit the power lock button ? if it moves some that it could very well be a bent rod.. or the actuator is stuck and needs to be replaced..

Why does the alarm on my 2000 jeep grand cherokee not go off when the lift gate is opened

Hi Gloria, I'm glad to help!

Gloria, the most likely cause for no alarm when the liftgate is opened is usually because the controller does not see the liftgate open. 2 things can cause this. (1) The alarm switch on the liftgate could be bad. (2) The wiring going to the switch could be broken somewhere in the wiring. On the Jeeps its usually broken where the wiring is bending all the time between the liftgate and the body of the vehicle. If you pull the rubber insulator out you can then check the wiring. If the wiring is good then the next step would be to try an alarm switch for the liftgate. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Gloria.

The rear lift gate on my 2006 Lincoln Navigator will not open automatically or manually and there appears to be no way to access anything inside the door from inside or out.

POWER LIFT-GATE OPERATION - To open the optional power liftgate, push the button on the instrument panel , press on your five-button key fob (if equipped), or press and release the control located in the left rear quarter panel (Figure B). To unlatch the liftgate glass, push the button ) under the center of the license plate lamp shield, or press on your five-button key fob. Do not open the liftgate or the liftgate glass in a garage or other enclosed area with a low ceiling. Keep clear of the liftgate when operating the rear switch. To open the liftgate manually, pull the handle located on the liftgate to release the liftgate from the vehicle. The power system will take over when you release the handle. To close, make certain the rear window is closed, and then pull down the liftgate a few inches to activate power closing. Closing the gate rapidly or more than a few inches may activate the obstacle detection feature and stop the power system.------------ Also click this link for more help:--- ------------ This should help.Keep updated.Thanks.Helpmech.

Liftgate emergency release cannot be found

All WJs feature an emergency unlock/lock switch lever for the liftgate. Should the liftgate become locked and unable to be opened due to a switch or circuit failure, a manual unlock/lock lever is accessible behind a small panel on the interior trim panel. As shown in the photos above, the lever can be moved up or down to unlock or lock the liftgate door.
