My smart fortwo will not engage automatic or reverse

the drive shaft just drives a pinion gear in the prop box that drives to gears that spin in opposite directions all the time
by selecting forward with the selector rod , a dog gear is moved forward to mesh with one gear that is turning or moves the other way to engage the other gear that is turning
that is the forward or reverse action for the prop
if you have forward but no reverse the it is not a drive shaft problem but a selector rod adjustment that is not moving the dog far enough to engage the running gear

run fault codes and look for faulty TCM and reverse servo .

It may be due to:
- Maladjustment of the gear lever cable or selector assembly.
- Valve body assembly.
- Planetary gear unit.
- Reverse clutch.

Hi Steve. Your foot has to be firmly (pressure )on the break to engage reverse gear. It won't go into reverse gear doing so.Hope this helps.

you car likely thinks its stuck in reverse, which it may be... even if you can roll it. you'll need to find a way to either get it into park or neutral, normally this can be done by the actual linkages under the shift console or from underneath the car.

the gear box has to be repair bcoz sometime due toimproper gear shifting the tooth of gear get cuts which may leads to such type of the problem k

first thing to check is if the break lights are working. if not reolace the stop lamp switch under the car.
