Make sure that the transmission oil level is up to the specified level and there is a slight play in the accelerator cable with the throttle pedal released. Follow the following diagram to adjust the transmission control cable.

OK I need help I just rebuilt my 1976 Chevy 350 after the first start up I am getting grinding sounds from the inside my motor while its running can anyone tell me why please help

the only things that are rotating to give a grinding sound are
the crankshaft, cam shaft and starter motor
for the crankshaft it could be slipper bearings too tight and are now spinning in the caps, missing thrust bearing halves on the crank shaft
on the cam shaft -bolts behind the cam gear touching on the back of the gear
oil thrower disc in wrong and the edge is running on the cover of the timing chain housing
starter motor not in correctly and jamming the pinion in the ring gear while the motor is running( some 350 motors have a shim adjustment for the starter housing to block
It is difficult to say exactly but if you followed the workshop manual to the letter you will know what you missed

I have a 1997 ram 1500 5.9 2x4 and im missing 2nd gear it shifts at about 35-40 mph. When I changed my tranny fluid and filter I found what looked to me like one of the paper discs from a cluch pack now my...

Those paper disc are from you 2nd gear band. You will need to replace the band. The front band is the 2nd gear band. The first thing I would try is to adjust the band. If there is still some material left on the band adjusting it will get you by for a while. The adjustment for the 2nd gear band is on the outside of the case. If you want me to post the adjustment procedure, let me know and i will.

Transit tdci 5 speed box misses 3rd gear when changing down the gear box, changing up generally ok. does not jump out of gear. What might it be? Lee

If its a front wheel drive, they have a lot of trouble with the gearchange cables going out of adjustment or require replacement.

Shifting gears late

take it back to the shop that rebuilt it and tell them to readjust the throttle pressure cable. if its shifting early then you will damage the transmission from having to low pressure

1986 blazer s10 auto transmission slips when it changes into 3rd

Yes, it can damage the transmission. The throttle valve cable controls a modulated pressure - according to throttle opening. A missing or improperly adjusted tv cable results in too low pressure. You didn't state clearly if cable has been installed now. Be sure to install and then make proper adjustment. It should be a self-adjusting cable but they most always need a bit of tweeking as the self-adjust is imo a poor design. Too little space here but you can probably google the adjustment proceedure. Hopefully it wasn't damaged and you'll be OK with proper adjustment. Good luck.
