Check the timing. Backfiring may be from timing is wrong, or valve train problems. I would do a compression test of the engine before buying any new parts. This will tell you the internal health of the engine, how sound it is. This is more than a small vacuum leak, like from a vacuum hose; maybe a large air leak, like the intake manifold gasket, just a possibility, but do the compression test first.
Blue smoke would be oil burning, is your engine worn out (compression test!)? A '91 prelude could have 400,000 miles !

Ki, yiyi. That some car, beats my old now-deceased '87 celica by a mile. sorry not even a cell phone, old folk, retired, no texting...a few more years back (about 2003) i had a beater 81 accord, and found a good forum for hondas, smart guys knew a lot, cannot remember name of forum, google hondas or preludes. read a little more on 3rd gen preludes: you have the 2.0 DOHC? or the B21A1 engine, a revised, souped up version (+10 HP)? that engine was prone to high oil consumption due to tough cylinder liners that were hard on piston rings, according to wikipedia, anyway. well, backfires start in the intake, so you would experience it at the air box. That loose hose is intriguing, it not a fuel line right? else you'd have fuel spilling. so is it a vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel pipe? if you have gas coming out of that nipple, the regulator is bad and must be replaced, about $50 at rockauto, (best prices anywhere). if it startede suddenly, sounds not like a timing problem, just possibly a valve problem, but first do as tommy suggested, check fuel pressure, wrong pressure causes havoc, multiport injected engine could be as high as 40 psi, don 't know honda specs, though, and hondas and toyotas, some of them no test port for fuel press. gauge, so one would have to tee into the fuel line somewhere, probably around the fuel filter, hope you have a shrader valve ( test port) on the fuel pipe, makes testing very easy. all I can think of for now, keep at it, u candooit ! if all else fails, do the compression test, lots of how to videos on youtube. good luck, bro.

The fuel filter is under the hood, in back of engine, mounted to the middle of firewall, or just to the passenger side more. Has two fuel lines to it, one is the line coming from the gas tank and going to the inlet side or end of the fuel filter. The other line comes from the outlet of the filter, and goes to the engine, to the fuel pipe that holds the injectors-on top of the engine. Sounds like you have a fuel problem, so change the filter, and if no help, have the pressure checked, to see if you need a new fuel pump. The pump is inside the gas tank, not very easy to replace, doable, but not easy.

First run a tank of a strong fuel system cleaner like BG-44K. If that doesn't help, clean the throttle body. If that doesn't help, take it to a mechanic.

I had a similar problem and the mechanic diagnosed it as a problem with the ignition coil. So you might want to get that checked.

Ignition coils has to be the answer. if it was the fuel pump your car wouldnt start. So i would say contact audi. they should have sent you a letter in the mail. We have the same car and i got a letter from them. ignition coils are the recall for the 02 a4.

I have a 90 Honda Prelude si and steam is coming from the over flow tank, but its not showing hot on the gauge.

Sounds like you are having a thermostat problem. It sounds like it is sticking at times and you may also have a bad temp. sensor. At times, if the thermostat sticks in the closed position, the sensor in the outlet side of the t-stat housing will not read the proper engine temp..Next time it gives you problems, lift the hood and carefully check the temp. of both of the water hoses to the radiator. If the top hose feels hot and the lower hose is only warm, then the t-stat. is stuck in the closed position and needs to be replaced.

I need a water pump pulley for a 1987 honda prelude si 2.0 fuel injected engine. Honda dealer show it as a discontinued part and not much luck yet in finding one at the local recycle yards. the car runs...

I think you will only be able to find on in the bone yards. I don't know if you checked online, but most junkyards have locator services.
Worst case, I would take the old pulley to a small machine shop and I am confident that they could repair anything that was wrong with it. They may charge you $ 100 or so, but that is much cheaper than a new car and the Hondas are great cars and last forever if taken care of.

Have a 1989 honda prelude si cant find fuel filter

Carbureted engines: Two filters; a small one is in the fuel line under the hood; a larger one is located at the rear, just inboard of the left rear wheel.
Fuel-injected engines: the filter is located in the engine compartment, against the firewall, just to the left (as you face the engine) of the throttle housing, and slightly lower (follow the fuel line from your fuel rail, where your injectors are, back to it). It has two fuel lines (in and out) going to it, and it is held in place by a clamp which bolts it to the firewall.
Hope this helps you find it.
