Question about 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander

My brake calipers are rattling quite badly on rough surfaces. Is it perhaps the pin holding the caliper in place or a worn bush? What do i have to change to get rid of this rattle

You can buy slider pin bushing kits for the caliper.check that it is the caliper and not stabilizer bar end links rattling which is very common.

    look at the front strut. the stabilizer link connects from the strut to the sway bar.the sway bar goes across to the other side and it connects to the other strut.if you take a look at the rear suspension,you will see a bar going from one side to the other.the links connect that bar to the rear suspension.our shop replaces alot of links.on cars 6-7 years old

    you can usually pull on the links by turning the front wheels without removing the wheels.....

How do i fix rattling brake calipers


1st i would make sure that it is indeed the calipers and not the stabilizer bar end links.the links should not make any noise if pulled on.there will be movement ,as they have ball joints in them but there should not be a clacking sound if you pull on the links. .Irritating suspension faults can also be found by hitting parts with a 2 lb rubber mallet. Also check the pad clips are in place or the pads could be rattling in the caliper.Worn slider pins can be replaced along with the bushing inserts..

I need to know how to change the front brakes on a 94 jeep grand cherokee laredo.


  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely using jackstands. Remove the wheel(s) on the side to be worked on.

  1. Drain a small amount of the brake fluid from the front reservoir using a suction gun or a turkey baster.
  2. Place a C-clamp on the caliper so that the solid end contacts the back of the caliper and the screw end contacts the metal part of the outboard brake pad.
  3. Tighten the clamp until the caliper moves far enough to force the piston to the bottom of the piston bore. This will back the brake pads off of the rotor surface to facilitate the removal and installation of the caliper assembly

  1. Remove the C-clamp.
Do not push down on the brake pedal or the piston and brake pads will return to their original positions up against the rotor.
  1. Remove the caliper mounting bolts. Tilt the top of the caliper outward and lift it off the rotor.
  2. Hold the anti-rattle clip against the caliper anchor plate and remove the outboard brake pad.
  3. Remove the inboard pad and the anti-rattle clip. Be sure that the support spring is removed with the inboard pad.

  1. Use a piece of wire to support the caliper so that no tension is placed on the brake hose. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose.
To install:
  1. Clean all the mounting holes and bushing grooves in the caliper ears. Clean the mounting bolts. Replace the bolts if they are corroded or if the threads are damaged. Wipe the inside of the caliper clean, including the exterior of the dust boot. Inspect the dust boot for cuts or cracks and for proper seating in the piston bore. If evidence of fluid leakage is noted, the caliper should be rebuilt.
Do not use abrasives on the bolts in order not to destroy their protective plating. You should not use compressed air to clean the inside of the caliper, as it may unseat the dust boot seal.
  1. If not already in place, attach the support spring to the inboard brake pad.
  2. Install the anti-rattle clip on the trailing end of the inboard pad's anchor plate. The split end of the clip must face away from the rotor.
  3. Install the inboard pad in the caliper. The pad must lay flat against the piston.
  4. Install the outboard pad in the caliper while holding the anti-rattle clip.
  5. With the pads installed, position the caliper over the rotor.
Before securing the caliper, ensure the brake hose is not twisted, kinked or touching any chassis parts.
  1. Lubricate the caliper pins and bushings with silicone grease. Line up the mounting holes in the caliper and the support bracket and insert the mounting bolts. Make sure that the bolts pass under the retaining ears on the inboard shoes. Push the bolts through until they engage the holes of the outboard pad and caliper ears. Thread the bolts into the support bracket and tighten them to 7-15 ft. lbs. (9-20 Nm).
CAUTION On models with manual/power brakes, pump the pedal until the caliper pistons and brake shoes are seated. On models with anti-lock brakes, turn the ignition ON and allow the booster pump to build pressure. Pump the brake pedal until the shoes are seated and the indicator lights turn off.
  1. Fill the master cylinder with brake fluid and pump the brake pedal to seat the pads.
  2. Install the wheel assembly and lower the vehicle. Check the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder and fill as necessary.

Vibration in rear of vehicle when braks are applied


I believe that the rear discs are warped or the tires are out of round when braking. More likely, the discs. --- The following are the instructions for replacing the front and rear pads for the front/back rotors. 1999-01 Grand Cherokee Front
  1. Drain 2?3 of the brake fluid from the front reservoir. Use the bleeder screw at the front outlet port to drain the fluid. If equipped with anti-lock brakes, relieve the system pressure.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Insert a small prybar through the caliper opening and pry the caliper (using the outboard brake pad) to bottom the pistons in the caliper bore. NOTE: This will back the brake pads off of the rotor surface to facilitate the removal and installation of the caliper assembly.
  5. Pry the caliper support spring out of the caliper.
  6. Remove both caliper slide pin bushing caps and slide pins.
  7. Lift the caliper from the anchor.
  8. Using a piece of mechanics wire, support the caliper so there is not tension on the brake hose.

    To install:
  10. Position the brake pads onto the caliper.
  11. Position the caliper into place on the anchor.
  12. Coat the caliper slide pins with silicone grease and torque them to 21-30 ft. lbs. (29-41 Nm). Install the slide pin bushing caps.
  13. Install the caliper support spring in the top of the caliper under the anchor; then, install the other end into the lower caliper hole. NOTE: Hold the spring in the caliper hole with your thumb while prying the spring end out and under the anchor.
  14. Fill the master cylinder with fluid and bleed the brake system.
  15. Before driving the vehicle, pump the brakes several times to seat the pads.
  16. Install the wheels.
Rear

Will I need a caliper reset tool kit to change the brakes on my 2007 toyota sienna or will a standard c-clamp do the job? And since it is an ABS system, I assume that brakes must be bled, correct?


Brake Pads Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Remove the front wheels. Front brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5838.gif

  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder.
  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.
  5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.
  6. Close the bleeder after the piston has reached the bottom of the caliper bore.
  7. Remove the brake pads, support plates, wear indicators and anti squeal shims.
  8. Remove the slide pins and bushings from the caliper support.
To Install:
  1. Lubricate the slide pins and bushings with brake grease.
  2. Install the bushing on the slide pin.
  3. Install the slide pin on the caliper support.
  4. Install the brake pad support plates on the caliper supports.
  5. Lubricate the anti squeal shims with brake grease.
  6. Install the anti squeal shims on the brake pads.
  7. Install the pad wear indicator facing upward and install the pads on the caliper support.
  8. Install the caliper on the support.
  9. Install the 2 mounting bolts, hold the slide pins and tighten 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  10. Fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes.
  11. Install the front wheels.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder. Rear brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5842.gif

  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and rear brake caliper assembly from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.
  5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.

To Install:
  1. Lubricate the slide pins with brake grease.

  4. Lubricate the anti squeal shims with brake grease.
  5. Install the anti squeal shims on the brake pads.
  6. Install the rear pads on the caliper support.
  7. Install the rear caliper on the support.
  8. Install the 2 mounting bolts, hold the slide pins and tighten 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  9. Fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes.
  10. Install the front wheels.

Front calipers rattle on rough surfaces it appears that the slide bolt bushs are worn the car has travelled 80000kls


I would be astounded if those bushes are worn at all!!

Sounds like ant-rattle shims are missing / incorrectly fitted.

Are you sure the disc calipers are rattling??

Brake pad replacement


Removal & Installation
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Front wheels
  3. Place a C-clamp over the caliper as illustrated, place a screw drive head against the outboard pad and hook against the rear of the caliper. Slowly tighten the screw drive and retract the caliper pistons into their bores and breaking the outboard brake pad from the caliper fingers.
  4. Once the pad is free, slide the caliper in on the guides to provide clearance between the rotor and inboard pad.
  5. Place an appropriate prytool through the center opening in the top of the caliper behind the inboard pad between the pistons using care not to contact the piston boots. Pry the pad to free it from the pistons.
  6. Remove the two caliper guide pin bolts and position the caliper aside. Remove the brake pads.

To install:
  1. Completely compress the caliper pistons
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Brake pads with anti-rattle clips onto the adapter
    • Caliper and align the guide pin bolt holes with the guide pins. Install the pin bolts and tighten to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    • Banjo bolt with new washers on each side of the hose fitting and tighten to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm)
    • Wheels
    • Negative battery cable
  3. Check and adjust the brake system fluid level and road test the vehicle.

How to replace brake pads on '93 f150


  1. To avoid overflowing of the master cylinder when the caliper pistons are pressed into the caliper cylinder bores, siphon or dip some brake fluid out of the larger reservoir.
  2. Jack up the front of the truck, support it on jackstands, and remove the wheels.
  3. Place an 8 in. (203mm) C-clamp on the caliper and tighten the clamp to bottom the caliper piston in the cylinder bore. Bear the clamp on the outer pad. NEVER PRESS DIRECTLY ON THE PISTON! Remove the C-clamp.
  4. Clean the excess dirt from around the caliper pin tabs.
  5. Drive the upper caliper pin inward until the tabs on the pin touch the spindle.
  6. Insert a small prybar into the slot provided behind the pin tabs on the inboard side of the pin.
  7. Using needlenose pliers, compress the outboard end of the pin while, at the same time, prying with the prybar until the tabs slip into the groove in the spindle.
  8. Place the end of a 7⁄16 in. (11mm) punch against the end of the caliper pin and drive the pin out of the caliper slide groove.
  9. Repeat this procedure for the lower pin.
  10. Lift the caliper off of the rotor.
  11. Remove the brake pads and anti-rattle spring. NOTE: Do not allow the caliper to hand by the brake hose. To install:
  12. Thoroughly clean the areas of the caliper and spindle assembly which contact each other during the sliding action of the caliper.
  13. Place a new anti-rattle clip on the lower end of the inboard shoe. Make sure that the tabs on the clip are positioned correctly and the loop-type spring is away from the rotor.
  14. Place the lower end of the inner brake pad in the spindle assembly pad abutment, against the anti-rattle clip, and slide the upper end of the pad into position. Be sure that the clip is still in position.
  15. Check and make sure that the caliper piston is fully bottomed in the cylinder bore. Use a large C-clamp, bearing on a piece of wood, to bottom the piston, if necessary.
  16. Position the outer brake pad on the caliper, and press the pad tabs into place with your fingers. If the pad cannot be pressed into place by hand, use a C-clamp. Be careful not to damage the lining with the clamp. Bend the tabs to prevent rattling.
  17. Position the caliper on the spindle assembly. Lightly lubricate the caliper sliding grooves with caliper pin grease.
  18. Position the a new upper pin with the retention tabs next to the spindle groove. NOTE: Don't use the bolt and nut with the new pin.
  19. Carefully drive the pin, at the outboard end, inward until the tabs contact the spindle face.
  20. Repeat the procedure for the lower pin. WARNING
    Don't drive the pins in too far, or it will be necessary to drive them back out until the tabs snap into place. The tabs on each end of the pin MUST be free to catch on the spindle sides!
  21. Install the wheels.

How to replace the front brake pads


    Calipers With Guide Pins
  1. Step 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Remove the wheel. Using an open wrench hold the lower guide pin. Remove the bolt that secures the caliper.
  2. Step 2 Pivot the caliper up and then suspend it from the frame using mechanic's wire. To remove the pads, slide the pads straight out.
  3. Step 3 Using a C-clamp, compress the caliper piston into the bore. Insert the new pads by removing the mechanics wire and pivoting the caliper back into it's place.
  4. Step 4 Clean the old bolt and apply thread locking compound. If the old bolt can not be used install a new bolt. Hold the guide pin using a back-up wrench when tightening the bolt. Using a torque wrench, torque the bolt to 26 foot/pounds. Install the wheels. Add oil to the master cylinder reservoir. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.
    Calipers With Sleeves and Bushings
  5. Step 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Remove the wheel. Remove the bolt that secures the caliper to the carrier.
  6. Step 2 Push the caliper up and pivot the caliper bottom out of the carrier. Remove the pads and the anti-rattle springs.
  7. Step 3 Install the new pads by putting the anti-squeal pads onto the caliper and then sliding the new pads onto the carrier. Put the caliper top back into place. Remove the mechanics wire and push the caliper up so that it pivots back into place and the bottom.
  8. Step 4 Clean the caliper mounting bolts. Install the caliper mounting bolts and using a torque wrench, torque the bolts to 18 foot/pounds. Install the wheel. Add oil to the master cylinder reservoir. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.

Worn brake pads


Front brake pad exchange guide.

Step1 Park the Dodge Durango on a flat surface. Put the emergency brake on and put wedges behind the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Drain 2/3 of the brake fluid from the master cylinder, using a syringe. Remove the wheel and the tire assemblies. Step2 Compress the caliper piston back into the caliper bore using a large C-clamp to drive the piston into the bore. Use additional force if it is required. Using a 3/8 inch hex wrench or socket remove the caliper mounting bolts. Step3 Rotate the caliper rearward off the rotor and out from its mount. Remove the inboard and outboard brake pads. Remove the spring clip that holds the inboard brakes in the caliper. Tilt the pad out at the top to unseat the clip. Remove the retaining spring that secures it in the caliper. Unseat one spring end and rotate the pad out of the caliper. Step4 Suspend the caliper assembly from the Durango frame using mechanic's wire. Do not allow the caliper assembly to dangle from the brake hose as this may damage the brake hose. Step5 Clean the surfaces of the caliper and steering knuckle with a wire brush. Apply multi-mileage grease or similar product. Using brake fluid or break cleaner clean the caliper slide pins. Apply a light coating of silicone grease to the pins. Step6 Install the inboard brake pad and it's spring. Install the outboard brake pad. Install the caliper over the rotor and seat it in its original position until it is flush. Using a torque wrench, torque the slide caliper pins to 22 ft./lbs. Step7 Add brake fluid to the master cylinder. Bleed the brakes. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery. Start the engine and pump the brakes 3-4 times to seat the brake pads. Reinstall the wheels. Test drive the Durango at slow to moderate speeds to ensure that the maintenance was performed correctly.
Rear brake pad exchange.

Step1 Lift the Durango off the ground with a car jack. Support the vehicle on all sides with jack stands. Keep children and small animals out of the vicinity when you replace the brakes. Step2 Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels with a torque wrench. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies and set them aside, face up, to prevent damage. Step3 Compress the caliper and remove it by lifting the top up and off the caliper adapter. Hang the caliper from the Durango's frame with mechanical wire. Step4 Remove the inboard and outboard brake shoes from the caliper adapter. Take off the top and bottom anti-rattle springs. Keep the springs separated, as they aren't interchangeable. Step5 Press the piston into the bore with a C-clamp. To prevent damage to the pistons, insert an old brake shoe in between the C-clamp and caliper piston. Remove the C-clamp. Step6 Wipe down the caliper mounting adapter and anti-rattle springs with brake cleaner. Grease the anti-rattle springs with brake grease. Install the bottom anti-rattle springs, followed by the top anti-rattle springs. Step7 Install the inboard brake shoes followed by the outboard brake shoes. Replace the caliper and the wheel and tire assemblies. Lower the vehicle to the ground and pump the brakes to seat the pistons.
