Rear shocks are stiff, and it rides very hard.

Rear shocks are the Air Shocks and they need compressed air in order to work properly, so you have to take closer look at your air management system.

97 lincoln town car lost that smooth ride, every bump now feels real stiff.

As long as the Air ride springs are keeping the tail end up, then it is most likely time for new shock absorbers. I have found that the best ride is from the oem motorcraft brand. They can cost double that of an aftermarket brand but they last a good while.

Trying to find a wiring diagram for air compressor. Rear air ride is out compressor not running at all checked fuses just replaced relay .

I know that you are trying to fix that air ride, but i put these replacement springs on my 93 towncar. Fixed the compressor problem (eliminated it) and cost a whole lot less. The install is kinda hard if you've never dropped a rear end before. Need a good tool set, a couple jacks, and jack stands to get it done. Check it out. Even having a mechanic install them would be cheaper than replacing a compressor.

Upgrade the rear suspension

I would recommend you replace the factory units with variable rate springs. They will not give the harsh ride associated with overall stiff springs but will add control while towing. Also, check that shocks are good.

2004 town car signature ride is rough

Do you still have the air ride on your Town Car? You may want to look into replacing it with one of Strutmasters non air conversion kits. The coil spring conversion gives you the support you need in the rear with out the sagging down from the air. Great prices and great service, check out

Hard ride in rear 04 towncar

It looks almost like a little shock absorber and it is located above the rear differential.

the ride height  is adjustable by adding or reducing the amount of air in the tires, ergo, any damage would occur in the tires, not the car.

Hard riding in rear

there is a sensor that reads the ride height of the car, it is called the ride height sensor, have it tested, it may be defective or not hooked up, the linkage comes off this sensor on a regular basis.
