Question about Mazda MX-5 Miata

My 1990 Mazda Miata (140,000 mi) just recently started smoking at cold engine start-ups. Now this is not your normal white vapor through the exhaust that lasts only a minute or so, this is more like fogging for Mosquitos throughout the entire neighborhood! Smoke appears to be gray-ish white in color. Also lifted the hood and noticed that some smoke comes up from the engine as well when engaging the throttle. Have also noticed some oil use (not bad, but having to add a half a quart or so a month). There are no visible leaks on the ground anywhere and no oil in the water or vice versa. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!!

Sounds like a valve stem seal leak. Go to your local auto shop and they should have an additive to try. But, a quart of oil a month is a lot unless you are doing lotsa miles.

The most common causes are worn valve guides and piston rings.
Its also possible your crankcase vent is plugged up.

Could the problem of white smoke when start up in morning be that the cold start sensor could be at fault


White smoke is actually normal Susan. It isn't smoke, it is steam.

White is steam
blue is oil
black is rich mixture

Gasoline contains water at molecular level, and when it burns it condenses through the cold exhaust system as steam vapour. You should find it disappears when the engine and exhaust is warm.

How come my truck blows out white smoke for the first minute after starting it and then is fine after that???


the white "smoke" is probably water vapor from combustion in cold cylinders
as the engine warms up it is super heated in the hot exhaust system and is no longer visible to the eye

X-Trail has white smoke blowing out exhaust pipe when I start up


It's normal for cars to do this in cold weather til the engine warms up a bit. If it's not cold you might have a head gasket going bad causing antifreeze to get into the engine.

1993 Mazda Miata runs perfect in everyway except that it just started blowing white/grey smoke from tailpipe, only happens when it is first started and cold engine


could be 2 reasons.
1. start of a head gasket leak to the combustion chamber. Will become more white and for longer period as it gets worse.
2. oil rings are worn and starting to pass oil to combustion chamber. They seal up once engine is worn.

If this condition happens first thing when you start the car, especially in cold temperature(s) climate, you have nothing to worry about; this is normal. It is simply water vapor- a normal combustion byproduct.

Here's what happens: the exhaust manifold is attached to the engine.

The exhaust manifold takes the exhaust from each cylinder and combines it into the manifold.

The exhaust gases then pass through the exhaust pipes to the various components of the after-treatment system which include the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, catalytic converter and the muffler.

Before the gasses reach the catalytic converter however, they pass the oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor tells the on-board computer what the composition of the gas is, and diverts some of this gas back into the engine via the exhaust recirculation system.

The recirculated exhaust helps keep some of the toxic gasses from entering the rest of the exhaust system.

The recirculated exhaust gasses also cool the engine cylinders, which in turn, decreases fuel consumption.

Depending on the year, make and model of the vehicle, the exhaust gas recirculation system may have an electronic EGR valve or a vacuum-operated valve. The electronic EGR valve has additional parts, including an EGR solenoid.

If the EGR system does fail, you may hear a ping and the vehicle won't pass emissions. If the EGR valve fails in the open position, the vehicle will not idle properly.

When the exhaust gases reach the catalytic converter, it reignites the gases that are not burnt in the combustion chamber so that they are not emitted into the atmosphere.

The catalytic converter creates a chemical reaction, burning the excess gasses and toxic by-products from the engine combustion process.

And in so doing, the catalytic converter changes carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons into water vapor and carbon dioxide (which is its main function.) And that is what you are seeing coming out of your car's tail-pipe!

You don't mention what that smell is reminiscent of?

You don't mention the colour of the "smoke" and you didn't say whether the engine is petrol or diesel?

You don't mention whether the road behaviour/performance is normal?

White smoke is almost always steam or in the case of a diesel it could be an unburned fuel mist, grey/black is excess fuel and blue or grey/blue is burning oil.

Some steam is fairly normal until the engine and exhaust system is hot but excessive amounts could be one symptom of head gasket trouble. If the engine is drinking coolant and sending it through the exhaust as steam it will sometimes smell spicy.

Burning oil smells a bit like burned eggs in the frying pan.

If the car hasn't ultra-low sulphur oil and fuel the catalytic converter will convert sulphur traces into hydrogen sulphide - the bad egg gas...

Engine smokes when cold.but runs great,all gauges show engine is running normal, engine only has 39,000miles on it


White smoke is the result of burning coolant and the blue is a sign of burning oil. A common cause of this is a blown head gasket.

This could also be caused by bad valve guide/valve seal that allows oil to seep into the cylinder while the vehicle is off. When started the smoke will come from the xhaust as that oil is burned. Within a minute or so the smoke stops because no oil is seeping intot he cylinder.

Check the plugs for signs of coolant, oil, or burning.

Water vapor coming out of the exhaust at initial start-up is normal; that is condensation that collects when the engine is not running. White smoke at start-up depends on a couple of things. Tell me, where do you live? When the weather is very cold, all engines will emit steam (white smoke) when they are first running; this stops after the engine has been running a while and is warm.

In short, if this is only happening at first start of the morning and goes away over time, there is nothing wrong.

If, however, the "white smoke" continues and never stops, you may have a blown head gasket.

If you're sure it's "smoke", then it's probably burning oil. But most likley it's water vapor. When an engine is first started and the air is cold, the water vapor in the exhaust will create visible steam. Automotible exhaust primarily consists of carbon dioxide and water vapor. If the engine and exhaust system are cold, the exhaust will be cooler when it comes out and it can create a cloud of water vapor.
However, if it's not water vapor, as I mentioned above, it could be oil smoke. If that's the case you need an engine rebuild since you probably have bad rings.
