One of the routine maintenance items that you should perform on your BMW is the checking and replacement of your accessory drive belts. The belts are driven off of the crankshaft and power accessories such as the water pump, power steering pump, alternator and air conditioning compressor. There are typically two belts on the car - one that powers the air conditioning compressor and another that powers everything else. Both should be checked periodically (every 3,000 miles, or when you change your oil), and particular attention should be paid to the main belt. The car can run fine without the air conditioning belt installed. Some of the early E30 cars use a standard v-belt design, and some of the later cars use what is known as a poly-ribbed belt (having many channels or ribs on the underside of the belt). The poly-ribbed belt setup utilizes a spring-loaded belt tensioner pulley that provides the proper tension for the belt at all times, making adjustment unnecessary. The traditional style v-belts need to be tensioned using standard types of clamps and tensioners. When inspecting your belts, the one thing that you want to look for is cracks (yellow arrow - Figure 1). If you see any cracks at all, you should replace your belts. The cracks will usually occur on the inside of the belt (the surface that typically rides on the surface of the pulley). With the poly-ribbed belts, this is the grooved surface. With the v-belts, this is the surfaces on the legs of the 'V'. With the poly-ribbed belts, replacement is a snap. The tensioners that hold the belt tight can be easily released using a socket and or 8 mm hex tool. Different tensioners turn different directions, so you may have to rotate the tensioner clockwise or counter-clockwise depending upon your particular car. The description of this process is one of those things that is difficult to describe, but very easy to do. First, pry off the small plastic cap that covers the tensioner (green arrow Figure 1). Then, place your tool into the tensioner and try rotating clockwise or counter-clockwise - will become immediately apparent how the tensioner releases the belt (Figure 2 and Figure 3). Removal of the two belts is easy - you do not have to remove the fan. Simply release the tension on the belt from the tensioner, and then the belt should simply slide off. Release the tension, and then you should be able to unwind the belt from the engine. The belt should be able to be maneuvered around and through the fan - you do not need to remove the fan to swap out any of the belts (Figure 4). It is important to note that if your BMW has air conditioning, you will need to remove this belt first, as it typically blocks the other belt. Another tip - if the belt is worn, simply snip it with some large tin cutters and pull it out of the car, after you have released the tension on it. Installation of the new belt is easy. Simply slide on most of the new belt onto the pulleys, release the tension on the tensioner, and slide the belt onto the tensioner. Check to make sure that the belt is securely seated in all of the pulleys. Verify that the ribbed portion of the belt is set against the crankshaft pulley. The proper orientation of the belt is shown in Figure 5. Replace any plastic caps that you may have removed from the front of the tensioner pulleys. Now, start the car and peek in at the belts. Verify that they are turning smoothly on all of the pulleys. For engines with the older-style v-belts, the procedure is nearly identical, except for the tensioning. The alternator is mounted on a bracket that rotates and is used to keep tension on the belt. In addition, there is a small rack-and-pinion device on this bracket that allows you to crank up the tension on the belt (Figure 6). The first step in setting or releasing tension is to release the nut on the back of the bracket that keeps the whole assembly secure. Do not attempt to turn the geared bolt without first releasing this nut on the rear - you will most likely damage the bracket. With the nut released, you can now turn the geared bolt counter-clockwise, releasing tension on the belt. Belt replacement is nearly identical to the poly-ribbed belts. Well, there you have it - it's really not too difficult at all

Can"t figure out how to remove the serpenteen belt


If you are changing the belt you dont have to remove it.get a socket and breaker bar or big wrench to fit the nut in the middle of the tension er push or pull and the tension er will move enough to put belt on Be careful, its spring loaded and can pop the hell out of you.Be sure to put the new belt on straight and not inside out the groves face in

cylinder head when removing the timing chain/front cover(s). Utilize the following steps when servicing the front cover, timing chain, guides or
tensioner(s)

Please reference the "Revision C" pages of the Nissan "1992-1999 Warranty Flat Rate Information Manual", Section "AG", Op Codes AG12AA,
AG14AA, AG142A, AG143A, AG144A and AG24AA. Also reference Section "CA", Op Codes CA20AA and CA22AA. You will note that the
descriptions and flat rate times applicable to the B13 and B14 vehicles (with GA16DE engines) for these Op Codes have been revised to reflect this
new procedure.
Caution
^ After removing the timing chain, do not turn the crankshaft and camshaft separately or the valves will strike the piston heads.
^ When installing chain tensioners or other sliding parts, lubricate contacting surfaces with new engine oil.
^ Apply new engine oil to bolt threads and seat surfaces when installing the camshaft sprockets and the crankshaft pulley.
^ Do not spill engine coolant on the drive belts.
^ Please refer to the Service Manual for the correct tightening torque.
Removal
1. Set # 1 piston at TDC on its compression stroke.
2. Remove the spark plug wires.

3. Remove the rocker cover (see Figure 1).
4. Remove the coolant reservoir tank with bracket and reposition it for clearance.
5. Support the engine with a suitable jack.
6. Remove cylinder head front mounting bracket.
7. Remove engine front mounting, then the engine front mounting bracket.
8. Remove cylinder head front cover.
9. Remove the upper chain tensioner (see Figure 2).

10. Wipe off the links of the upper timing chain next to the timing marks on the sprockets. Put paint marks on the timing chain, matching them with
the timing marks on the cam sprockets and idler sprocket (see Figure 3)
11. Remove the four (4) front cover to cylinder head bolts.
12. Remove side and lower engine compartment splash covers.
13. Remove the accessory drive belts.
14. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
15. Drain coolant by removing the cylinder block drain plug and opening the radiator drain **** (Refer to MA section of the Service Manual).
16. Drain engine oil.
17. Remove intake manifold support of engine front side.
18. Remove power steering pump, pump bracket and tension rod. Position pump aside for clearance.
19. Remove the thermostat housing (See Figure 4).

20. Remove the lower chain tensioner (see Figure 5).
21. Remove the front exhaust tube. Refer to the "FE" section (Exhaust System) of the Service Manual.
22. Remove the front and rear engine gussets (if equipped) on either side of the oil pan.
NOTE:
On A/T models, remove the rear plate cover.
23. Remove the oil pan (see Figure 6).
a. Insert the Tool between the cylinder block and oil pan.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage the aluminum mating face. Do not insert a screwdriver, or the oil pan flange will become damaged.
b. Slide the Tool by tapping it on the side of the Tool with a hammer.
24. Remove the A/C compressor and position it aside for clearance.
25. Remove the A/C and alternator bracket with the alternator.
26. Remove the oil pump drive spacer.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to scratch the drive spacer when removing it.
27. Remove the front cover bolts and front cover.

CAUTION:
One bolt is located on the water pump (see Figure 7).

CAUTION:
Be careful not to tear or damage the cylinder head gasket.
28. Remove the cylinder block to front cover alignment dowels.
CAUTION:
Do not hit the dowels or the cylinder block will crack.
29. Wipe off the links of the lower timing chain next to the timing marks on the sprockets. Put paint marks on the timing chain, matching them with
the timing marks on the idler sprocket and crankshaft sprocket (see Figure 8).
Installation
1. Install the crankshaft sprocket, making sure the mating marks face the front of the engine.
2. Install the idler sprocket and lower timing chain using the mating marks and the paint marks made during the removal process.

Be careful not to tear or damage the cylinder head gasket.
3. Install the lower chain guides.
4. Front cover installation:
a. Using a scraper or other suitable tool remove all traces of liquid gasket from the cylinder block and front cover mating surfaces.
b. Install new crankshaft seal in front cover.
c. Install new oil passage O-rings and apply a continuous bead of RTV sealant to the front cover (see Figure 1).
NOTE:
Use Genuine Nissan RTV silicone sealant P/N 999MP-A7007, Three Bond P/N TB1207D or equivalent.
d. Install the front cover to the engine.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to tear or damage the cylinder head gasket or oil seal.
5. Align oil pump drive spacer with the oil pump, and install.
6. Install the oil strainer.
7. Install oil pan, referring to "Installation" in the "OIL PAN" section of the Service Manual.
8. Install upper timing chain and sprockets, using the painted reference marks made during removal.
9. Install upper chain tensioner.

a. Before installing the chain tensioner, insert a suitable pin into the pin hole of the chain tensioner (see Figure 2) to hold the tensioner in.
b. Once the tensioner is installed, remove the pin.
10. Install the lower chain tensioner (See Figure 3).
NOTE:
Make sure the gasket is facing the proper direction before installing the tensioner.
CAUTION:
Now rotate the crankshaft by hand. Check that no binding or interference problems occur when the engine is rotated.
11. Install the thermostat housing.
a. Use a scraper to remove all traces of liquid gasket from the mating surfaces of the engine front cover and the thermostat housing.

b. Apply a continuous bead of RTV sealant to the housing as shown in Figure 4.
NOTE:
Use Genuine Nissan RTV silicone sealant P/N 999MP-A7007, Three Bond P/N TB1207D or equivalent.
12. Install camshaft sprocket cover:
a. Use a scraper to remove all traces of liquid gasket from the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and camshaft sprocket cover.
b. Apply a continuous bead of RTV sealant to the cover as shown in Figure 5.
NOTE:
Use Genuine Nissan RTV silicone sealant P/N 999MP-A7007, Three Bond P/N TB1207D or equivalent.
d. Install camshaft sprocket cover.

13. Apply RTV sealant to rocker cover gasket (see Figure 6a) and install rocker cover, tightening the bolts as shown in Figure 6b.
14. Install the following parts:
a. Crankshaft pulley.
b. A/C compressor and alternator bracket with alternator.
c. A/C compressor.
d. Power steering oil pump and tension rod.
15. Install front and rear engine gussets (if equipped), and rear cover plate (A/T models).
16. Install front exhaust tube.
17. Install upper right engine bracket and mount.
18. Install coolant reservoir tank.
19. Install alternator, power steering and A/C compressor drive belts.
20. Install engine compartment splash guards.
21. Install vacuum hoses, electrical harnesses and connectors.
22. Install spark plug wires.
23. Refill with coolant. Refer to the "MA" section ("Changing engine coolant, Engine Maintenance") of the Service Manual.
24. Refill with engine oil. Refer to the "MA" section ("Changing engine oil, Engine Maintenance") of the Service Manual.

I don't have the figure for your car, but the below figure shows how to remove the A/C belt.
the other belts should have a simple slot in the bracket for adjusting. If you have more questions, let us know.

3.0L SOHC Diamante
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the lockbolt on the face of the A/C tensioner pulley.
  3. Turn the adjusting bolt of the A/C tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the A/C belt.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor belt.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the face of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley.
  6. Turn the adjusting bolt of the tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the belt.
  7. Remove the power steering/alternator belt.
To install:
  1. Install the power steering/alternator belt first and then the A/C compressor drive belt.
  2. Adjust the belts to the proper tension by turning the adjusting bolts and tighten pulley fixing nut/bolt.
  3. Tighten the mounting nut of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

NOTE The manufacturer does not provide a torque specification for the bolt that secures A/C tensioner pulley.
  1. Connect the negative battery cable.

Where is the tension pully on a 1993 ford taurus 3.0 motor


there is no spring tensioner on some of the 3.0 engines. See instructions below. I will paste a pic on the version that DOES have a tensioner at the bottom of this post.

3.0L Engine-Except SHO
ALTERNATOR BELT WITHOUT AUTOMATIC TENSIONER

  1. Loosen the adjusting arm and pivot bolts.
  2. Turn the alternator belt adjusting screw counterclockwise until the old belt can be removed.
  3. Remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the new belt over the pulleys. Check that all the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys.
  2. Adjust the belt tension, then tighten the adjusting arm and pivot bolts.

3.0L SHO Engine
ALTERNATOR BELT
See Figure 2
  1. Loosen the nut in the center of the idler pulley.
  2. Loosen the idler adjusting screw until the old belt can be removed, then remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the new belt over the pulleys in proper contact with the pulleys.
  2. Adjust the new belt to specifications as follows: Turn the idler pulley nut to the right to tighten the belt to a specification of 220-265 lbs. (980-1180 N). Torque the idler pulley nut to 25-37 ft. lbs. (34-50 Nm).

POWER STEERING AND AIR CONDITIONING BELT
See Figure 2
  1. Remove the alternator belt.
  2. Loosen the nut on the tensioner pulley.
  3. Turn the belt adjusting screw on the tensioner counterclockwise until the belt can be removed, then remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Position the new belt over the proper pulleys, making sure the V-grooves are properly seated.
  2. Install the alternator belt.
  3. Adjust the power steering and air conditioning belt to a specification of 154-198 lbs. (690-980 N) with a belt tension gauge.
  4. Adjust the alternator belt.
3.0L Engine (Except SHO) and 3.8L Engine
VEHICLES THROUGH 1993 WITH AUTOMATIC TENSIONER

See Figures 4 and 5
  1. Insert a 1 / 2 in. breaker bar into the square hole in the tensioner.

On the 3.8L engine, the tensioner has a1/2in. square hole cast into the rear of the tension arm directly behind the pulley. On the 3.0L engine, the1/2in. square hole is cast into the spring housing on the front of the tensioner.
  1. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and remove the belt.

To install:

  1. Install the drive belt over all the pulleys, except for the alternator pulley on the 3.0L engine for vehicles through 1992, or the idler pulley for 1993 3.0L vehicles.
  2. Rotate tensioner counterclockwise and install the belt over the alternator pulley. Make sure that all the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys.
  3. On the 3.0L engine, install the alternator belt for vehicles through 1992.
  4. For 1993 3.0L vehicles, install the drive belt over the idler pulley.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. For 1991 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Remove the starter motor and flywheel cover.
    2. Remove oil pan retaining nuts and bolts. Remove lower frame and powertrain onto transmission table.
  4. Remove the front cover, as outlined earlier this section.
  5. Matchmark the intermediate sprocket, chain link, front face of cylinder and crank sprocket for reference.
  6. Retract the timing chain tensioner shoe by using J–33875 or equivalent, on both sides of the tensioner and pulling on the thru pin in the tensioner arm to retract the spring. While spring is retracted, insert a holding tool to hold it.
  7. Remove the timing chain tensioner retaining bolts.
  8. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  9. Remove the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket and intermediate sprocket using tools J 8433 and J 28611, as shown in the accompanying figure. If the intermediate gear does not slide off easily with the timing chain assembly, rotate the crankshaft back and forth to loosen the tight fit.
  10. If necessary, remove the timing chain tensioner. To install:
  11. Check to ensure that crankshaft key is installed and fully seated and the chain tensioner is fully installed and blade retracted.
  12. Slip both sprockets and chain over the proper shaft and engage the slot in the key. The intermediate shaft may move against the rear cover. Slide the sprocket and chain on the shafts, maintaining the proper alignment shown in the accompanying figure. While installing note the following:
    1. Make sure the rubber and tension blade of the tensioner does not become caught, misaligned, or dislodged.
    2. The large chamfer and counterbore of the crankshaft sprocket are installed towards the crankshaft. The intermediate sprocket spline sockets are installed away from the case.
    3. The crankshaft sprocket must be pressed on for the final 0.31 in. (8mm) to the seated position using tool J38612 or equivalent, as shown in the accompanying figure.
    4. Check to make sure timing was maintained. Remove the retaining pin from tensioner.
  13. For 1991 vehicles, install the oil pan retaining nuts and bolts, and the flywheel cover and starter.
  14. Install the front cover, as outlined earlier in this section.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Seat Belt repair/replace


  1. Remove front seat.
  2. Remove adjuster cover. A
  3. Slide floor anchor cover.
  4. Remove floor anchor bolt. B
  5. Remove shoulder anchor bolt. C
  6. Remove front and rear kicking plate, then remove center pillar upper and lower garnish.
  7. Disconnect seat belt pre-tensioner connector.
  8. Remove the screw securing seat belt pre-tensioner retractor, then remove seat belt and seat belt pre-tensioner retractor.
  9. Remove bolts securing seat belt adjuster, then remove seat belt adjuster. Reverse procedure to install.J
