You just bought rear pads. The E brake pads are on the inside of the rotors. They have to be adjusted. They are not self adjusting. When I do brakes, all adjustments are free. If there is some reason I can't adjust them, I would tell you. So your problem could be the inner pads are worn or need adjusted, the cable could be stretched out, or a combination of both. Usually cable adjustment is under the car.
The adjustment is made at the handle under the console:
ADJUSTMENT OF PARKING BRAKE STROKE
1.Pull the brake lever with a force of approx. 196 N (20 kg, 44 lbs.) and check the number of clicks.
Parking brake lever stroke (Standard value) : 8 clicks
2.If the number of notches is not the standard value, adjust the cable length with the adjusting nut on the equalizer. 3.The indicator light will go out when the brake lever is fully released, and will light up with the lever pulled one notch. If it does not operate properly, replace it.
4.After the adjustment, check that the rear brakes do not drag with the parking brake lever released.
The Kia Carnival has drum brakes on the rear and they are self adjusting. They can however be adjusted by working the handbrake lever up and down a few times, if it has not been previously adjusted by using the cable adjustment, then this will probably not work, and it is something I come across quite a lot. if all this fails, then it is a matter of taking the wheels off and removing the drum. firstly check the position of the handbrake actuating lever (its connected to the cable) with the handbrake off (wheels chocked of course) the lever should be as far back as possible to the brake shoe, if it isn't check that you have a little bit of slack on the cable and it is not seized if not adjust the cable off a little so the levers return fully. if you look you will see the self adjuster you can turn the notched wheel a few clicks and then put the drum back on. make sure it is not binding when you turn it (a slight rub is ok) tap the drum (top, bottom, left, right) to centre the shoes (this is important because it will give false adjustment if you don't). once you have done this to both sides, double check both wheels are still running free. replace wheels a try handbrake, it should be ok now. Check how many clicks you need to pull the lever to apply brake and adjust the cable just enough to remove any slack in it, NO MORE. Warning! DO NOT HIT THE DRUM HARD AS IT WILL CAUSE FRACTURES. Apply service brake pedal three times with a force of approximately 175 lbs.
Fully apply and release parking brake three times. Full application may require two pedal strokes.
Raise and support vehicle, then mark relationship between wheel and axle flange.
Check parking brake pedal assembly for full release as follows:
Turn ignition switch to On position.
If ``Brake\'\' lamp is illuminated, operate manual brake release and pull downward on front parking brake cable to remove slack from pedal assembly.
Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies, then install two lug nuts to retain each rotor assembly.
If two parking brake levers on both calipers are not against lever stops on caliper housings, check for binding in rear cables and/or loosen cables at adjuster until both left and right levers are against their stops.
Tighten parking brake cable at adjuster until either the left or right lever begins to move off the stop, then loosen adjustment until lever moves back barely touching stop.
Operate parking brake several times to check adjustments. A firm pedal feel should be obtained by pumping pedal two full strokes and rear wheels should not rotate forward when parking brake is fully applied.
Install wheel and tire assemblies, aligning marks made in step 3.
Do check the rear brakes but below is some help as far as adjusting the cable the proper way. Per specs after all is done your parking brake should be correct as you pull up the lever after 4 - 8 clicks. Hope this helps....
remove the back brake drums ,slacken handbrake cable then run a mini grinder around the lip on the edge of the drum .Then adjust the auto adjusters manully so when the drum is push on it just goes on ,tap with a hammer all around the drum to level the shoes and if need be adjust up a bit more ,then when finished re-adjust the cable so you have three notches on handbrake lever
There really should not be any adjustment necessary, the parking brake is self adjusting. When you first install new pads It may take several puls of the lever to get them set up.
The cables MUST be absolutely free moving, for the system to work.
The adjustment as pads wear is inside the caliper itself and it is automatic, there is a little lever on the caliper and it moves the pads ahead every time it is pulled. This lever can become sticky and not return after it is pulled. you can free it up by removing the lever and then removing the rubber dust sheild behind it. Then you clean and lubricate it. When all is moving freely, the arm should spring back against a hard stop each time the cable is pulled.
There is an adjustment on the cables under the car, just behind the centre console. It normally does not need adjusting unless you replace the cables themselves. To check the adjustment, you need to make sure that the little levers on the rear calipers are fully returned to their rest position, and make sure the handle inside the car is down. Then adjust the nut to take up the slack in the cables.
I dont think that they can screw up the calipers inside. I have had them apart and there is really nothing to bust. I suspect very strongly that the levers on each caliper are not moving freely.
Most places dont understand all this, even the dealers, so they sell you new cables and calipers. I know for a fact that you can make it all work if you get everything moving freely.
there is a cable tha runs to each break . sometimes the cables are adjusted from the handle just move the cover from the lower part of the lever and check the cables i think it's a 7/16th bolt you use to adjust the cable might be a 1/2 in
