Start by checking the battery voltage, while doing nothing and while you try to start your engine
a good battery should read over 12 volts
when cranking the engine it should not drop to less than 9 volts cold and 10 volts warm
if battery is good
check all the electrical connections very well

Corrosion at the positive+ side of the battery. White or green in color. If it has been there for a while the corrosion will make it's way into the battery cable. if the cable is long, you can cut some of it off and add a new lug. Or just replace the cable from the battery to the starter.

If it's a steady rhythmic click there is either a weak battery, and I don't care if the lights and the horn works, or a bad connection at the battery, the positive on the starter or the ground to the engine block. Simplest thing to do right now is try to jump it. that will discount the battery being weak. The rest is look and tighten.

check your battery first, then check your ignition switch, then check your spark plugs and wires.

Undo your terminals... Get a battery cleaner (fine scrapper) and clean(scrap) your battery post AND terminals.

Starter justs clicks

One single click when you turn the key to start the vehicle usually indicates a bad starter.

A series of rapid clicks when you turn the key to start usually indicates a weak or bad battery.

My 1997 Chevy Lumina won't start, it sounds like it wants to but it wont turn over, has gas, tried the carb spray, still won't start. Help!!!

did you use carb cleaner or starter fluid. if you try starter fluid and it starts for a second and then dies you might have a fuel pressure issue. if not check for spark.

97 chevy lumina wont turn over

The starter solenoid will click when the battery is to low to start the car. Have the battery charged and load tested to make sure it's good. Check the charging system to make sure the alternator is good. Check the wire connections at the starter. If either is loose, the starter won't work.
With a full, known good battery, turn on the headlamps and try starting the engine. If the headlamps stay bright, the contacts in the solenoid are bad. If the headlamps dim greatly or go out, the starter is shorted out and must be replaced.
Also try turning the crankshaft manually with a breaker bar and socket if you suspect that the engine may have seized up.

Where is the starter located on the 1999 Chevy Lumina?

if everything shuts off when you try to start it you most likley have a bad wiring connection, check connections at battery and fuse block.

the starter is located on the lower front of the engine where the engine and the transmission come together, just above the subframe.
