After sitting for a period of time it is NOT uncommon for a vehicle to exhibit symptoms such as this especially if the battery died as well. The lifters have a tendency to collapse under the constant valve spring pressure and the computer may have to relearn the idle characteristics. The best advice without actually seeing the vehicle would be to charge the battery, change the oil and filter if it is old and then restart it. Let it run without touching the accelerator and as it warms up it should clear itself up. There definitely wasn't a mechanical reason for the tow? I ask because I can't imagine what other reason would make someone tow their vehicle.

Good luck,
Vinnie

IS that vibration related to RPM? If so the harmonic balancer and or the crank shaft might be out of balance. If it is not related to RPM, then you need to check to see if the shafts are all installed correctly and the motor mounts are ok. It could also be the tires flat spotted if they sat a long time.

2004 Chevy Cavalier - car cranks over but won't start

Well, let me try to say this without being too offensive.....
Your car only quit running on you once. I find it really hard to believe that all of the parts you replaced so far, needed to be replaced to get the engine running again. It is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY that all of these "failures" would occur all at the same time.

You would rather pay for $500+ in parts that the car apparently did not need, than to pay to have it towed to a shop where they have the knowledge, training and equipment necessary to properly diagnose the vehicle and get it running again? And now you want someone to tell you what is causing the problem with your vehicle without the benifit of any diagnostic testing?

There is NO WAY that ANYONE can accurately tell you what is wrong with your vehicle without following the correct diagnostic procedures recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The most anyone can do online without proper diagnosis and testing is GUESS! You seem to be doing that very well on your own.

I chased a similar problem for several years. Stalled, got towed no problem found. The thing would heal and then fail at random on hot days. After checking everything electrical, fuel pump pressure etc, nothing could be found and I could not duplicate the problem. One day after being towed to a shop again, van started and would not fail but this time I had the mechanic put a clear by pass line along with a pressure gauge and I monitored the flow for about forty five minutes. Suddenly I started to see a stream of air bubbles and the pressure began to drop until the engine shut off. It was the FUEL PUMP all along and no one was able to determine that w/ all the test equipment. Went to Kragen Auto, now Oriely's and got a fuel pump. Had the shop drop the tank and install it. Have never had a problem again. Don't worry about what the mechanics tell you that it is not. Change the fuel pump

I would check the vacuum lines thoroughly as one may have collasped or previous owner replaced with a substandard one, which may be partially collaspe then upon warming up will vacuum itself shut causing the motor to surge then fail to run or start if it happens to be a main line that is affected.

Chrysler Intermittent Starting Problem

I have the same problem with my 2004 Chrsyler Concorde, however mine didn't start doing this until a recall involving reprogramming the cam shaft sensor was done. But I have exact same issues and no trouble codes appear for dealer either. My guess is that it is the cam shaft sensor, which I am going to get replaced. If you solve yours first, please post and let me know.

Sounds like your fuel pump is going bad. Have your mechanic do a pressure test on it.

Quits no spark for a while

It is most likely the thin wire that hangs off the side of the distributor. They often short out and have cracked insulation allowing them to short out. You can get a spark tested and connect it to on of the spark plug wires and crank the car and look for spark. If no spark there, check for spark at coil wire. If you have there but not at plug, you know the problem is between the primary and secondary system-meaning most likely the cap and/or rotor in the distributor or bad wire previously mentioned. Have you changed the cap and rotor yet? These are inexpensive and will often solve the problem especially when the problem is when it is damp outside. The problem is not the fuseable links on the shock tower, like the other person mentioned. It probably is a loose wire somewhere like the distributor wire.
