It has to have the chip. If you have the key with the chip, use an ohm meter and read it. You can get a resistor + or - 10% that you can tie into the wires from the ignition switch. I write the number down under the dash. Reference later if you need it.

No - replacing the actual switch on the lower part of the steering column will have no effect on the passkey lock assembly, which is where the key check is done. I have never heard of a replacement assembly that does not have the passkey feature.

I was going to buy a new ignition switch from AutoZone. The keys that come with it don't have a chip on it. That's why I asked if it would start.

You are talking about the ignition switch CYLINDER, not the switch itself. Your car came with passkey and resistor type keys (two options) so as near as I can tell, a generic cylinder/key type will NOT work. If you need to replace the cylinder, I suggest you take the vehicle VIN to a GM dealer and get one there.

Ohh. I see. I get it. So if I lost my keys what can I do about that?

Same thing - take the VIN to a GM dealer and they will cut you a new one. In fact, you should get at least one spare made. I don't recommend messing with the switch wiring.

SOURCE: I REPLACED THE STEERING COLUMN

If you do not have a pass key any more, then you will need to dissable the antitheft (pass key module) in order for the engine to turn over. From what I gather you have replaced the column with an older version, which will not allow any comm. with the module. The pass key module enables the starter circuit. See diagram.

SOURCE: Does a 95 Buick regal have a chip in the ignition

1995 Regal has a factory "anti theft" type device. The way it works is the ignition key has a resistor built in, if you try to start the car without the correct key (with the resistor), it shuts down ignition and no gas will go to engine.

In case of a problem or clarification or my solution was insufficient, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

If you are satisfied, rate my solution with the "thumbs" or (even better) add a testimonial.

1993 camaro no secrty light wont crank

Most all mechanics pull the dome light fuse before working in the interior to avoid draining the battery.. On the 1994-95 Camaro the 20 Amp fuse courtesy light, also illuminates the orange security light in the dash cluster. If the security light is out, and your car won't start, it's because the VATS is in theft mode and you don't see it. Clean the key, if that don't work you may have an open short or broken wire in the orange jacket of the ignition (key) switch. Disconnect the harness connector and connect a matching resistor with the correct ohms of your key inline with the purple and white wires without cutting the connectors off, because you may latter need them. - Original Owner of 1995 Camaro.

Okay heres what happen my chip in my key fell out so car wont start noter what doo I do

research vats bypass on google. I had to bypass, you simply measure the resistance through the chip, go to radioshack and buy the resistors that add to that amount or withing 2%. cut the orange wire that leads to the ignition and install the resistors bypassing the vats permanently.

95 chevy camaro with pass key will not start. Replaced key and it started. Later it did not start. What's going on? What are some things to try?

If it's the same as the VATS system in my 86 Corvette (resistor pellet in key) the ignition switch might need to be replaced. The contacts on the key wore low, replacing the key helped for a short time but the new contacts wore the switch down faster then it too needed to be replaced. $200!
