Most catastrophic may be a Head gasket leak. Check coolant tank for bubbles with the cap off and engine running. Otherwise, last time serviced? Did you check oil? There is a trouble code system, but need a service manual to read the code.

Is the Exhaust Converter 12 to 14 years old & blocked?

Is the Oxygen Sensor over 80,000 miles?

Spark Plugs over 3 years old?

Have you looked at data, to see if you can find a problem?

Is it going into Closed Loop, after it warms up, so you have fuel
control?

Have you checked fuel pressure?

Please help me anyone..I have a 92 cadillac deville with a extreme backfiring problem. It has actually plown the muffler apart. We changed the spark plug, fuel filter 2x, distributor system, map senso


I know of 1 problem in the Northstar engine. On some year models there was a sooting problem in the valves and engine heads. The manufacturer recommends an annual application of a chemical GM sells and it is potent. This chemical requires the engine to sit at least 8 hours to overnight for the chemical to dissolve the soot.

This problem can cause the valves to stick and would make the compression leak into the exhaust if an exhaust valve was stuck open. So in some cases unburned compression gases could flow into the hot muffler and cause the problems you mention.

Also worthy of mention is the damage to vacuum solenoids and egr fixtures from the backfires you mention. Other problems like spark plugs and distributor systems would show up on trouble Codes as defective and misfires. But you have replaced most of this to no avail.

This is because the Mechanical action of the valves can be unmonitored to some degree, more like cause versus effect. The onboard computer can show the results of the problem but not the cause.

Some old testing equipment like a Vacuum gauge can show valve action. This gauge is cheap, but a little hard to find today.

You really do not want to have to pull the heads off of this motor. It will cost more than the car is worth because if this is the front wheel drive model, you have to drop the engine and transmission frame and separate the body for this mechanical carriage.

On the 4 cylinders next to the firewall, it sounds like the tappets are very loud. When it's idyling, and in "drive", it idles terrible. When RPM's get to 2000, then it is quiet, and runs...


They can be adjusted its the valve lesh you need to remove the valve covers and adjust the rocker arm clearance on most engines you don,t say what engine you have so ask your mechanic to make sure but all on one side sounds like an adjustment

a mechanical gov can use springs or fly weights to control the amount of fuel delivered at a given rpm. an electronic does basically the same thing but with the use of speed sencers and cervos that can control fuel, spark, and timeing. the first is a straight forward approach and has worked well over the years. but the secound is more precise and adjustable withe the stroke of a key board. as to which is better, that depends on the application. mechanical works off engine rpms and takes abuse well but can only regulate speed useing rpms so if you have more gears the faster you can go. where as the electronic uses speed sencors that pull info from the trans or wheels and will only let you do the speed set by the computer

How do you set valves on a 1955 331 engine


Engine cold, you set the Intake valve clearance at .0005 to .0025
(.0005 = 5 ten-thousands, or also said as 1/2 thousandths.
.0025 = 2 and a half thousandths)

Set the Exhaust at .001 to .0025
(1 thousandths, to 2 and a half thousandths)

Use a feeler gauge. The Firing Order is just like a Chevy. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
Adjust these mechanical tappets, just like you would for any Chevy engine with mechanical tappets.
