If the filter is dirty then the transmission fluid will not pass thru it until the fluid warms up and thins out. you should do a trans service ASAP before it gives up permanently.

Has the fluid ever been changed? That would be a cheap place to start.

Transmission Question

It sounds to me like the transmission is starting to fail. As the clutches inside the transmission wear the clutch pack gains additional clearance. Your pressures in the transmission will be higher with cold oil so it has a tendency to build a bit of extra pressure, but it's also slower in flowing through the transmission. This results in a harder hitting first gear. As the transmission warms up, it will reduce the viscosity of the oil and work fine. Cold weather kills automatic transmissions. Let it warm up before driving it or it won't last long. It will require an overhaul soon.

Need to replace supercharged engine and trans. in a 96 Riviera

Faster and safer to drop the whole unit from the bottom with the cradle. Replace the supercharger snout bearing and seal before you install the replacement engine and the supercharger belt. Also replace the boost valve to your transmission just to ensure your getting the proper transmission line pressure throughout your transmission.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe

The Transmission will sometimes stick in first gear when it is cold out. The transmission also sticks in third gear all codes read good anyone no why?

How many miles are on it most transmission fluids should be flushed and changed at 60,000 miles but if you can't afford that I recommend lucus oil treatment for transmissions it is a 24 oz bottle so if your fluid is full you must first drain some off this can be done by siphoning from filler tube with turkey baster and short length of hose . This additive is very thick and must be warm when added . also may need to drive it for 50 miles or so for it to mix with your trans fluid . this should help . From my personal experience with my 96 dodge dakota 4x4 with 132,000 miles it worked for me.

1998 Riviera Wont go into gear when its cold out.

The best thing you can do, and it probably is due, is to change the fluids. The transmission fluid breaks down over time, just like the oil but, most people ignore it, until it creates a problem.
