If the filter is dirty then the transmission fluid will not pass thru it until the fluid warms up and thins out. you should do a trans service ASAP before it gives up permanently.

Has the fluid ever been changed? That would be a cheap place to start.

well you try servicing it(filter, flush and additive) to get some more life out of it, the simple version is your ****** is just getting old...nothing technical
