Question about 2001 Isuzu Trooper

When driving my 2001 Trooper the tranny clunks in 3rd gear. This happens whether I park and idle for awhile or shut it down and start again. If I keep driving the check trans light comes on. If I shut it down for an hour or so the system seems to reset and is ok.

We have idea what trans is in that car. post the VIN?

the lamp didnt lie, why not do what the book says
scan it. to sell all DTCS
or get it serviced.
2 choices.
ignoring it can burn up a good trans.

SOURCE: 98 Isuzu Trooper stalls on cold start, idle issues..

I had the same issue on my 99 Trooper.

It would usually start when completely cold, but idle around 2k RPM.
It would drive fine. But if I shut it down, ran into a store, and came back out, it would start but immediately idle.
Had to ride the gas a little to get it into gear.
The Check Engine light has been going on and off for 6 months or so.

I took this to my local trusted repair shop (no Isuzu dealers within 200 miles).
The diagnosed the light, and found that the Intake Gaskets were bad or leaking.
The idling problem was related to the car not being able to control the amount of air coming in.

They replaced the Intake gaskets by the next day, and I haven't had a problem since. And no more check engine light, which has been on half a year.

Here's some details from my bill:
(1) Intake Gasket set $107.95
Misc materials $21.00
2.1 hours of Labor

The total cost to me was $345.00, and I definately don't feel gipped.

SOURCE: check or fill tranny

If you are under the car, find the oil drain pan and look toward the rear of the car.  There you will see the transmission pan that has two bolts in it.  On will be higher than the other.  The higher one is used to check/fill the transmission.  The fluid should be filled high enough that it is just starting to come out of higher hole when the car is on level ground, that is when it is full.  You need to make sure that you run the car and move it through the gears and you should be able to get a little more fluid in there.  Obviously the lower bolt is for draining the pan.  Hope this helps!

We still need more info. What Kind of noise? Does it make the noise constanly when you drive it or is it just a clunk sound when you put it in gear? Is it makingnoise when sitting there and idling in park or in neutral? Was the fluid nice and redish in color or brown. If it was brown then it is burnt from getting hot. It still sounds like fluid is not circulating. You may need to take the tranny fluid pan off and replace the filter. I believe it may have a sensor also connected to the tranny underneith that may cause it to disingauge when there is fluid circulation trouble. Give me more info on the sounds and we can keep trying. Transmission leaks, clunks into gear


Well your clunking noise is most likely the u-joints the leaking pan is the tranny pan what you would have to do is get a tranny kit and change the pan gasket tranny filter and fluid or take to a shop and have a tranny service done.

2002 trooper A/T 4WD will not move from start or stop.


One of two things has happened. Either you have lost first and second gear in your tranny (Winter drive starts you out in third gear) or your TCM (Transmission control module) is shot.

Check the TCM first, it's the lesser (cheaper) of the two evils.

3rd gear help please!


I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata and I had the same problem. But mine would always shift into 3rd gear and STAY there until I turned the car off. I took it to a Hyundai dealer and he had to rewire a speed sensor on top of the transmission. Apparently a little animal got up in that tight little spot and gnawed on my sensor wires. The car has run fine since. To make a long story short, it might be your speed sensor on your transmission.

2001 Trooper Tranny Problems??


Hi....i just bought this same model......i am having the same problem but not only at first drive......its all the time......now......im not positve that its the torque converter.....but im leaning that way.....reason why....i used to have a mitsubishi galant.......after pulling my hair out and even rebuilt the engine.........comes to find out it was the lock up converter slipping ...but it didnt vibrate.....the RPM gauge was always moving up and down as i drove and it slipped in and out of lock up.....im about no narrow this down....if i find more....ill reply.

TRANSMISSION SLIPS IN 3RD GEAR. NOT ALL THE TIME. KICKS OUT OF GEAR. WHEN I REV UP ON MOTOR SLIGHTLY IT KICKS BACK IN AND DRIVES FINE...


Its a early sign of your tranny about to go. A flush wont help so be aware. It looks like Troopers with about 100k miles are prone to this problem.
