Question about Ford Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Hey Stephan P. and others... - 1994 Ford F-250, Turbo Diesel, pre Power Stroke - hard to start, maybe a minute or more?

Within last 12-16 months new : Glow Plugs & Batteries Within last 8-12 months new: Injectors and Return kit w/orings-seals Last month: new positive cable, starter, and starter relay on fender. Could Glow Plugs already be in need of replacement? I don't know what brand of Glow Plugs were put in? My first diesel truck, very hard start, worse than now, so I had a local mechanic do it, since I was not familiar with diesels. All of the other above, I did myself. Any ideas on what to check for? Or should I just replace the glow plugs? Im in Oregon, temps are not that cold right now, hi 30's to low 40's over night, but still a hard morning start. Thanks all.

Does it have dual batteries? A friend of mine threw 3k$ at his, then found out one of the batteries were low or had a bad cell. It was turning over for a long time, and we never suspected them being at fault. Like 2 750 or 850 CCA batteries. Have yours tested at a parts store to rule them out.

Diesel. Reduce power lite turned on. Shut off engine and started back up - lite is off. Can it be driven?

Jerry, Drive to a good shop. So many things can cause reduced power light unfortunately. The first step would be to get the truck hooked up to a scanner/computer and have the computer scanned for trouble codes. One thing that you could try is to drain the water from the water separator that is mounted on the frame under drivers front door. If the PCM picks up on water, power is reduced until water is removed/drained. It could be an exhaust sensor that is reading faulty. Unfortunately from here its impossible to tell you exactly what the fault is because there are just so many engine sensor inputs that could cause your problem. Check the attached links, forums, instruction and guides, Good luck

How much life in my pre-powerstroke Turbo?

The turbochargers usually wear out from lack of oil changes and early shutdown after a long hill pull. But easy to see faults oil leaks at turbo inlet to intake. remove pressure intake hose and view with flashlight if you see oil then the seals are leaking or mash down on throttle real fast and let up 3-5 times in a row if blue smoke comes from exhaust start saving your money it is ready soon.

Did you ever change the fuel pump? most of the time when fuel pump is weak does that on hills, and then is hard to restart

Ford f 250 6.0 diesel power stroke when you start the engine the steering wheel becomes wery strong if you use the foot brake why ?thanks a lot .OVY

the power steering pump also is connected to the brake booster and both take vaccum this is a verry common problem and sucks, the only way to fix this is to get a new power steering pump, just to have it happen again in a few years.

Problems With Cold Starts.

I know for some models that Ford had another Diesel timer for the glowplugs for severe weather. This timer was meant to keep the glowplugs on longer.

I had an 87 Ford Diesel and the top wires on the timer were tight and clean. For some reason when I loosened them and retightened the wires the timer worked better.

Many truckers use a Diesel additive and usually the fuelstops have modified Diesel for cold climates. I understand there is a Cetane rating for Diesel and Premium Diesel may help.
