Hi Greg, I'm AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair in St Charles MO
I look forward to helping you with your problem.

Greg, I have worked for Chrysler for over 30 years. I have found several different issues with your problem.

Here's what I need you to do first, because this is the most common problem I have found. Drive the vehicle until its at operating temperature, then park the vehicle with it still running. I need you to grab one of the heater hoses going to the heater core, One hose you will have to let go of quickly because it to hot. Next grab the other hose and if you do not have to let go of it quickly and its only warm then you have a restriction in the heater core and it will need to be replaced.
If the heater core is OK its possible you may have a thermostat issue. If the thermostat is stuck open it doesn't allow it to remain at operating temperature because the thermostat never closes, so when your driving the heat get better.

NOTE: The heater core is still the most likely issue. If you need further assistance go to my website here:

Heater core has a trapped air pocket or is clogged up. Most likely clogged. Replaced many of these. You have to remove the entire dash and plenum to replace it.

So the fan is not working ? blower
or if that is ok, then the damper is stuck in fresh air
so that only moving makes? air flow.
seems the heater core is hot. all you need now is dampers right
scan it yet?

It probably low on coolant. The heater will blow cold when there is not enough water (coolant) to keep the heater core full. Check the radiator (not the overflow reservoir) when it's cool.

I have a 2005 Altima SE 3.5 .. Whenever I stop and the heater is on, it blows cold air. However, when I drive the air becomes hot ?.. Any hints ? had anybody had the issue before ?

the first thing i would do is check the coolant level when the engine is cold. When the coolant level gets low enough the first thing to stop working is the heater. If the coolant level is good than I would suspect a plugged heater core.

If the thermostat where stuck open you would notice that the temp gauge would read low. If the water pump was not working correctly the vehicle would be overheating.

Heat goes in and out and the temp gauge goes up and down

Your temp sensor has nothing to do with your heater. The temp sensor needs coolant in order to work properly. So first check the coolant level because if it is low your heater will act the way you describe. Once the coolant gets low enough the heater will blow cold. Another possibility is the radiator cap. After the engine has warmed up it expands when it cools down it contracts. As it is contracting if the cap is weak air can be drawn into the system and cause air pockets to form and will cause the same problem

1998 subaru forester overheating heater blows cold air

Any chance of a head gasket leak? Is the coolant level still full? These were known for head gasket issues. Coolant is a closed system and level will not drop unless there is a leak. Make sure there is no air in the system. Replace the radiator cap to make sure that it is operating properly.

You probably have air in the system. Take off the radiator cap and start the engine. Turn the heater on hot. Let it warm up and fill the radiator as the level drops. Make sure the thermostat opens and coolant is flowing in the radiator. Continue to add coolant until the level stops dropping. Also check for any bleed ports on the hoses or housings where they attach. If you see any bleed ports, crack them open and let any air out. Put the cap back on and see if the heater is working. If this doesn't work, please get back to me.

Engine overheats when heater pipes connected

I think you could be right about there being air trapped in the system.
Or the heater core(radiator) is plugged.
Either way you need a pressurized radiator coolant pump to put the coolant in without air being trapped.
Although,i have seen it done by jacking the vehicle up high enough that the radiator was now higher than the heater core level, and then the coolant was put in.
But this is dangerous to try.
