Question about Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

2002 vw beetle 2.0 non-turbo automatic. I bought the car used a few weeks ago, and I just can't figure out what is causing a very loud roar in the front end. I don't think it's a wheel bearing because there's no change in sound when I take turns, and the wheels spin with no resistance when spun by hand. The noise is constant and is still there when I coast in neutral. Cv axles seem good, there's no ticking or other indication. Also, the abs wanted to kick in when it shouldn't. The noise has steadily gotten worse and just turned into a metal on metal sounding grinding noise, and at the same time the brake pedal is softer and no longer jumps, however it still stops fine. I first thought it was the bearings, then I checked my axles, then I thought it might be in the transmission, then the brakes factored in...any ideas?

Check engine light came on 2002 vw turbo diesel beetle?

well first off you need to have the codes checked and go from there there are many reasons that can cause the engine light to come on. when you find what codes are stored in it you can go from there. as for the turn signals most of th time i replace the emergency flasher switch. but it wouldnt hurt to check the fuses first.

I'm sure this problem was resolved LONG ago, but I just had to mention this to anyone else who might be hearing a noise like this. I drive a 2002 Turbo S and I too thought something was seriously wrong with my car day I first bought it. If your car is a Turbo it has a rear spoiler that pops out when you accelerate to about 40mph. It stays out until you stop the car, and makes a LOUD clunking noise when it disengages. The noise is not nearly as loud when you accelerate, but can be startling for those who don't expect it when the car stops. I have only driven the one Turbo with the spoiler, so I can't say whether they all make so much noise, but mine always has.

I just bought a 2002 VW Beetle in perfect shape! Looks and runs great..but smells like a box of crayons! I've been reading online and found out this is a common VW problem. I like the car enough to try to...

That's just the way it goes, I guess. If others are having the problem, then it may be just something that one has to get used to, short of spraying other scents or deodorizers in the cabin to get rid of the smell, apparently, at least.

Loud noise folled by loss of power

In order to run a turbo you have to have low compression in your cylinders. when you drive to aggressively you can blow you turbo out and you car will have no power at all. A turbo pushes air into you intake in order to get that power. if it goes out your engine will run like its 30 years old and blown. get a new turbo. take care and good luck.

Automatic? 6 years old. It is probably low on fluid and/or it needs serviced(oil/filter).

If its an automatic, it is the transmission. My wife's beetle did the same thing and we had to take it in for them to work on it. Luckily it was under warranty.

My 2002 vw turbo beetle cut off while driving.

this is not good; you probably ran the turbo bearings dry and they have seized try to loosen the turbo by removing it breaking it loose and lubricating the bearings if they are still good or, find another one at the junkyard

2002 VW Beetle turbo

Ok we figured something out. The turbo model has a rear retractable spoiler that flips up when you go above 45 mph and down when you go below 10. The later models just have a fixed spoiler. Still looking into if it should make that loud 'ratchety' sound.

Idle compensation is not correct due to one or more of the following; Bad/clogged air filter, vacuum leak, EGR valve, PCV valve, head gasket leaking, bad gas, water in fuel, fouled plugs, 02 sensors need replaced, locked torque converter, etc. These have not been listed in order of expense; just as they come to mind...accordianman
