What is the points gap?

Points gap was used before electronic ignition. The "points" were a set of contacts found under the distributor cap and rode a cam that opened and closed them at the firing point you set with a timing gun (a gun shaped device that flashed light, when the first cylinder plug fired) aimed at a scale on the front of the engine overhanging a mark on the crankshaft pulley. The points were set to a gap suggested by the manufacturer.

Spark plug gap for 1997 C1500?

Spark plug gap can affect the life of the condenser if you have a points and condenser ignition. If your car has Capacitive Discharge (CD) ignition, the gap will be OK anywhere between 25 to 30 thou (28 mil is usually optimum). 28 thou on spark plugs is fine for points ignition as well.
If you have a metric feeler gauge, type in "conversion" on your web browser, you will find a number of programs that will convert anything to anything to convert thou (thousandths of an inch) to mm.

The points are located under the distributors cap, that's the thing with the plug leads come from, open it you will see the points, hey open and close as the engine turns over, the cap is the space between the points when fully opened, adjust to the thickness of a credit card.

It is a long time since I have had one of these, but from memory the points should be 8-10 thousanths of an inch. I never bothered much with the plugs as my old girls didn't seem too fussy.

1. points not opening or closing
2. Bad condenser
3 bad rotor or cap
4. Bad coil
5. Not likely but could be just a bad wire from the switch to the coil.

First you need to know if you have voltage to the coil -- if yes- go to 6.
if no -- go to 7 ..

6. Put a piece of thick paper between the points contacts, then check for voltage at the points from the coil . If there is voltage at the points ,, check the gap with the points wiper set on the high side of the lobe on the cam in the distributor . A gap of .015-.018 is most common on that engine.
7. If no voltage then back track to the ignition switch ,, fuse box , then battery

I put a plug wire in the coil output to the distributor and a plug in the other end -- lay plug on block and crank engine .. If there is spark at the plug , your in the ball game . If the spark is orange change capacitor if blue spark good to go . you might want to clean and gap your plugs before you reinstall them .
