Not working, sure, but is the odometer blank or frozen only? what?
odometer dead, speedo dead. sure.

99gc, or WJ jeep it is.
the cluster, is first to address.
did you run the FSm cluster tests yet, simple free tests.
no tools needed.

with any scan tool got P1681/87 cluster errors. CCD bus errors?
the PCM must able to talk (comm) to the Cluster brain,
or the cluster will not update.
some just freeze the miles in the odometer to last known.
the cluster does that freeze. not PCM.

see here>?
http://www.fixkick.com/Jeeps/jeeps.html#cluster

there is the self test. at the least the speedo needle will wag.
for this problem. if it does, then comms are lost. to PCM
and needs to be scanned to find out why.

It has a Vehicle Speed Sensor on the transmission that has three wires going to it. I would make sure it is plugged in good. Do you have a CEL, and if so, have you had the codes read?

Speedometer quit working

this is normal for all cars. this old, !
what is your question. most Geo speedos die at 150k miles.
you forgot to say, did odometer die too? big time error that...
for any accurate answers.

my guess, is , you are asking how to diagnose the speedo,
right?
ok pull the cable at tranny, and spin it by hand (or drill) in the same
direction as the needle moves, in dash.
mine is CCW direction
so spin it in CCW dir. and see if the needle moves up scale.
if not , maybe the cable is snapped, inside.
so pull the cable out. is it snapped?
if not the head is bad, if both the speedo and odometer
are dead,
here is one page showing how to do that.
if both are dead , it can only be 3 things.
1: BAD HEAD.
2: BAD CABLE
3: tranny gears x2 bad,one or both stripped, (plastic gears)
the test is easy, spin it from down under. and look.
do not pull the cable down under or the cable will disengage the head, and slip (simple sqaure drive it is)
gettting the head out is another long story.

What happens to clocked up miles if I replace my speedo

if you have a regular state inspection, your last know miles will reflect in your scooters state records.Upon your next inspection it will show the new mileage. If you are worried about reselling your scooter, keep the records for the replacement and mark the miles on it at the time of replacement. The new owner will appreciate your honesty.

Speedo starts off fine for a couple of miles and then moves round the clock to max speed slowly. Next time out same beginning but it sticks at 65! Any idea? Chris

Thsi is likely a problem inside the speedometer guage internally with the driven gears. They use drive motors to drive the needles inside. If it is pretty continuous then the speedometer is in trouble and will require a speedometer specialist to rebuild the unit or replacement of the unit.

it sounds like the speedo head in the instrument cluster is bad.
buy a used cluster on ebay

VSS only affects speedo when car is moving.

1989 Honda Accord speedometer not working. What is a speedo head?

The speedo head or cluster is the part that houses the speedometer and tach, etc. now it may be the speedo cable that comes from the transmission to the speedo head that has broken. If so replace the cable and your back in business. If it is the head you can get them from your local recycle yard.

Speedometer doesnt work

You will need to pull the speedo cable 1st and see that it turns freely at the transmission, then pull it at the speedo end and make sure it is not broken, pull it out of the cable housing to check this, lube it (white lithium grease) and reinstall, if the cable looks good then the speedo head will have to be removed and sent out for repair.

1997 Geo Metro speedometer and odometer do not work

Let me guess, it goes up to about 30, stays there, and if you go faster (past what would be the halfway point of your speedometer) it starts dropping below 30. It sounds like the type of speedometer that uses two magnetic cores at 90 degrees to each other, and one has gone out.

Troubleshooting and repair should be similar to this: http://www.fieros.de/en/articles/speedo.html
