Does the fuel pump have a cut off switch (1996 cadilac sls) and if so where.

yes this car does, some times it is in the trunk by where the lid hinges or on the passenger side compartment lower kick panel. some times they hide it really good so use a flash light to look around in the truck real good. it also could be in the rear wells of the trunk you might have to pull the carpet back to see it, good luck hope this helps

Gear select problem

The PRND321 switch is mounted on the transaxle assembly. It is a multi-signal switch sending information relative to gear selector position to the BCM and ECM. The PRND321 switch also contains the neutral safety {start} switch and back-up light switch. It also provides park input to the automatic door lock module {if equipped}. Your problem is not an internal transmission problem. The service manual says to check for open circuits or shorted ground circuits through a diagnosis chart that is in this manual. One part of it, at the end says to replace the PRND321 switch and the other says to replace the BCM or repair the open circuit or wire, depending on what code is read through the BCM. Having worked at a Buick dealership, I have sold a few of the switches for various problems. This switch is under the hood and on top of the transmission in-which it is exposed to heat - cold and water. My suggestion is to reset and clear the codes on the diagnostic center and see if they come back. Check connectors on the switch and if codes come back replace switch since it would be less expensive than a BCM. The switch is a wear item as it is moved every time you move the gear selector.

White smoke coming from exhaust, smells like gas

Check the fuel pressure regulator. It should have a vacuum line attached to it - disconnect the vacuum line and turn the ignition on - if fuel come out then that's your problem. DON"T do this while the engine is hot or you could start a fire!

BCM

it could be, but there are other things to consider. first did you check the fuses? the connector plugs under the dash? the relays in the junction box under the hood? i would check these first and let me know of the results...
