Fan motor for cooling radiator keeps running after shut vehicle off, I tap on fuse box on right front of engine, what is wrong?

If the coolant temp is hot the fan will keep running till cools , if it stays on after this the censor may be at fault.

In the under hood fuse / relay box ! There are three of them COOLFAN/relay 1-2-3 . It's marked on the under side of fuse box lid .
The engine cooling fan system consists of 2 electrical cooling fans and 3 fan relays. The relays are arranged in a series/parallel configuration that allows the powertrain control module (PCM) to operate both fans together at low or high speeds. The cooling fans and fan relays receive battery positive voltage from the underhood fuse block.

This is listed under the 300 series but fits most 90's Mercedes Benz cooling systems.
The first thing most people notice about there Mercedes benz is the the temperature needle climbs or sneaks towards the red in there car. This is not uncommon. Is it wrong or bad for the vehicle? The plain answer is no.
First lets talk about what is going on. The motor heats the water, the thermostat holds most of the water back to keep the block a more constant temperature. The water pump is always pumping while the motor is running so none of the hot water goes the wrong way backwards into the radiator or coolant overflow tank. The radiator is cooling off the coolant by either driving, viscous fan or the electric fan or fans your Mercedes has up front when stopped or slowed. When the thermostat reaches its set temp around 85-95 it fully open until the block fills with cooler water then shuts again, filling the radiator with hot water to be cooled. All in all pretty simple system to keep the block cool and evenly heated to keep stresses down.
Now some do not like the fact there system goes so close to red. Well one contributor is the Air conditioning system. When that compressor kicks on it basically is just a pump that transfers heat out of the car into the engine compartment making the cooling system work harder.
Another cause of climbing heat systems is a failed thermostat closed or open that keeps the system water hot in the block or hot throughout the system. Best fix is to of course replace it. Just follow the top hose unbolt it from the block and insert the new unit with proper gasket and direction and its good to go.
A bad or failing water pump can limit water circulation so if your car doesnt cool off after replacing the thermostat its the next to replace. Kind of not a simple Do It Yourself job with all the belt and pulley issues that may come up due to age. Not impossible just not easy.
Leaks in the system can cause boiling and rising temperatures so look around. The coolant tank small hose to the radiator on either end is normally the first, or even the winshield washer deicer or heater core lines. Cap can go bad but you will normally see a bad gasket on it if it fails.
Radiators can become clogged with scale after years and years of service with limited flushes and not adding distilled water. Sometimes the plastic cracks and just need replaced.
Ok now there are some external parts to the coolant system that directly effect it.
The viscous fan, it can lose the oil it has internally and not spin enough to cool. The rule is with the engine running if you can stop it easily with a rolled up newspaper replace it.
The engine temp sensor is normally 2 wire sensor near the front of the engine close to the intake normally. When it goes bad it will not let the electric fans come on when needed. If your having issues, cheap fix replace it.
The last piece of the system is the electric fan/fans. These have alot of integrated systems to look at if they do not work so just be careful. First there fuse is not in the fuse box. It is a aluminum strip fuse normally located on the firewall inboard of the brake booster in a tootsie roll sized container. When it goes out the fans do not come on. First without the A/C on operation is as follows 105 fans kick on low speed kick off at 95. So as you can see the needle will easily climb close to red in traffic again stay calm this can be normal. When the A/C is engaged (in a system with proper charge and working order) the high speed fan operation will happen independent of engine temp. This is because all the heat being transfered by the compressor as noted earlier.
I hope this sheds some light on some cooling system woes of anyone. This may apply to alot more vehicles but is specific to Mercedes. Operation of the coolant system is similar no matter what car you drive (unless its electric or air cooled of course).

Front ac blower wont shut off after the truck is shut off


This would indicate to me the vehicle has had an issue with the wiring, perhaps an accident in the front end, and someone has hooked up the wires wrong.
The radiator-cooling electric fan can run up to several minutes after you shut off the engine, as it is cooling off the cooling system.
The A/C fan, however, should shut off with the engine.

We have a 2002 Chevy Malibu.. And the fans want run to keep the motor cool.. When the motor get too hot the car will shut off.. So, what do I do about it??


First check fuses, there are two fans if fitted with air con. The air con. fan only comes on with the air con. The engine radiator cooling fan comes on at operation tem., it is controlled by a censer switch on the radiator .If there is power to the switch and the switch is OK the fan motor is at fault.

2000 cougar running hot but fans are not kicking on


Check to see if the fans are connected to the wiring harness, if radiator was removed the shroud and fans had to be removed, are fan motors connected to wiring harness, are there any damaged wires at connectors, check the fans fuses at fuse box (Power Distribution Box) in the engine compartment (front right side)(push in on tab in front of box lift up then back to remove cover), Engine Cooling Fan Fuse, Yellow 60 amp, posistion #49, Check the Relays, Engine High Speed Cooling Fan, posistion #R8, Engine Cooling Fan, posistion #R9.

Overheats if left idling but not if driving...cooling fans aren't coming on...what couls be wrong?


the cooling fans on your car are comanded on by the engine control module which reads engine temperature from the temperature sensor . when comanded on the engine control module sends a signal to the cooling fan relays . which in turn runs the current to the cooling fans . So you might want to check the cooling fan relays and make sure the fues for the cooling fans are good and the relays .if the cooling fan fuses and relays are good it could be a problem with the fan motors or the engine control module not reading the right temperature in that case it could mean you have a problem with the temperature sensor

Vehicle overheating today. Condenser fan motor runs when a/c is called for. Radiator fan runs only when a/c is on. Fuses are all good. Temp drops when vehicle continuously moving. Running heater full bore...


First check for a cooling fan fuse in the engine compartment relay box. if the fuse is good, it would be the relay or the switch.
Try this-- find the switch somewhere on top of the engine--probably near the front. it looks like this with a connector on it:

Pull the connector off and use a big paper clip to connect the terminals inside the connector. Start the engine. If your relay is working, this should make the fan come on. If not, the relay is bad. If yes, the switch is bad. Let me know if you have questions.

After the vehicle is running for an hour, the vehicle get hot and shut itself off.. After it cool down, it start up. We were told it might be in the steering column.


have you replaced yor thermostat? have you checked your radiator cooling fans to see if they are coming on while your car is heating up? when your temp. guage is halfway up your fan should come on. you can check fuses and relays in fuse box[black box under hood drivers side] check those to see if fuses are blown or if fan relays are coming on[ticking while engine heating up]radiator could need flushing out also, just narrow your search some by elimination. if you open radiator cap before you start engine,then start motor, let it warm up.look for circulation,,flow of fluid,bubbling, then thats a sign it's circulating,thermostat is good. no flow means that thermostat not opening,thats bad thermostat.replace the thermostat.if not that are fans coming on? when engine at mid range on temp. guage does fan come on? if not check fuses @ fan relay. if fan comes on ,it's good.check water pump pulley for wobbly pulley while motor not running, shake pulley back @ forth for play. any play in pulley means bad water pump. are the belts on? i went through everything i would look for myself. hope this finds your problem!!!!

98 honda civic engine overheats, cooling fan does not turn on


Under the hood of the engine, close to the battery, there is a black plastic box. This is the Fuse Relay and Control Unit Box location. Remove this Box cover. The top of this box shows which fuses or relays control the different electrical components within the engine. On the Drivers's Side of this box (right-side if you are leaning over the bumber and radiator, and facing the windshield) you will see a radiator fan relay. You can pull this and take it to your local Parts store and ask them to test it. If it tests bad, then buy another (likely $20+). Do NOT keep driving your car until you get your radiator fan fixed, <this image should help you>80dd710.png because over-heating the engine could ruin your engine ($$$$).

simple fix for now solution
grease the fans bearings sounds like there over do for this kind of maintenance
also could be a speed variable cooling relay
example a vehicle reaches certain speeds the fans shut off alowing the air outside to come inside to keep vehicle cool with out using much power
