My question is where is the input/output speed sensors located on this transmission, my input sensor is bad but I'm going to go ahead and change both cant find where the output sensor is located

The input and output speed sensors look identical on the connector side. The one over the solenoid pack is the input, the one closer to the left frame rail or left front wheel is the output sensor. I hope this helps.

It is located on the front of the transmission. you will see 2 of them one on the left under small transmission lines it is the input then to the right behind the radiator overflow there is the other one. Easiest way to change them is with a 1" deep well socket

The speed sensor is on the tailshaft of the transmission,on the passenger side of the car,it has 3 wires. The output sensors are located on the front of the transmission about mid-way up the housing & only have 2 wires. Note the output sensors are not responsible for vehicle speed. Only the output shaft speed is recorded. They are for finding the correct cvi(clutch volume index) only. If you have a cvi issue,the transmission is toast.

The first thing I needed to do was to identify my transmission. The 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan Sport (3.3 L) has the A604 transmission, as did any Caravan from 1989 to 2006. Might as well replace both sensor and will take less then 30 min from start to finish.

Vehicle's with A604 transmissions have chronic input and output speed sensor problems and also with the little wire connectors to those input and output speed sensors. The dealer offers a repair kit for these wires instead of buying a whole new wire harness. On most of these vehicles, If you have a code 41-44 you should check for weak battery voltage first. now the shop needs to check the wiring for poor grounds. I have seen that The transmission controller often goes bad causing these same codes, so be careful.

Parts/Tool List:
10mm socket (to remove top of air intake)
1" socket (to remove/tighten sensors)
standard screwdriver (to loosen hose clamps)
Vehicle Speed Sensor - INPUT
Vehicle Speed Sensor - OUTPUT

Removal/Installation:
The first step is to remove the airbox cover. This can be removed with a 10mm socket. Under the airbox cover is the actual airbox; remove the filter by unsnapping the clamps holding the lid in place. Maybe this is a good time to see if your filter needs to be replaced.

Once you've got the airbox cover and filter off, you should be able to see where the sensors are located on the transmission. On the left is the input sensor behind the Transmission Solenoid pack by the transmission dip stick tube , and on the right is the output sensor.

The input sensor is located just under two little hoses; remove the clamps and get those houses of the way. Make sure that you keep track of which hose goes on the left and which one goes on the right. To remove the sensor connector, there's a tab that lifts up, probably under the sensor. It lifts very easily, and the connector slides right off. If it's not coming right off, you haven't properly lifted the tab.

To remove the sensor, you need a 1" socket which should fit right over the terminal. The socket should also be large enough to clear the hose nipples. Note that with both of these sensors, the base is plastic. If you use anything other than a 1" socket, you'll rip the plastic to shreds and never be able to get the sensor off. USE the socket.

In most situation, the output sensor was covered in sludge, which may have been the source of the problem. Both the input and output sensors use some kind of magnetic receiving unit, and those magnets will pick up tiny metal shavings that are suspended in the transmission fluid. I suppose 10 years worth of buildup is enough to cause the sensor to throw bad signals. But maybe something on the inside caused the problem... so replacing it outright was the best decision.

Anyhow, after replacing the two sensors, the transmission problems 98% of the time will completely be resolved. No more weird cruise control issues, no more erratic speedometer, and no more 2-to-1 gear drops when coming to a stop. Problem solved. Good luck and merry xmass

Not sure what you mean by rpm sensor. The signal for the tachometer comes from the PCM and is based on signals from the crankshaft position sensor, located on the right rear of the engine where the transmission bolts to the engine, but if this is bad, there are a lot more problems than the tachometer not working. There are two speed sensors on automatic transmissions, an input speed sensor and an output speed sensor. Both are located on the left side of the transmission, the input speed sensor near the front (just behind the bell shaped portion) and the output speed sensor near the rear. In addition to those there are wheel speed sensors for the ABS, located in each wheel area covered by the ABS.

the output speed sensor is located on the transmission. while standing in front of the vehicle and looking down at the transmission you will see two rubber hoses. under those hoses you will see the input speed sensor. if you look to the right of that sensor, and you may have to look from underneath the vehicle you will see another sensor that is identical to the input speed sensor. That is the output speed sensor. The output speed sensor is the one that shows how fast you are moving on the speedometer.

A wheel speed sensor?

They are located at each individual wheel.

An output or input speed sensor?

They are located on the drivers side of the transmission. They are yellowish white in color and look identical to each other. You will need a 1 inch socket to remove and replace them.

The input speed sensor is towards the front of the transmission and the output speed sensor is located toward the rear of the transmission.

hi , their is two different speed sensors on your vehicle one is the input speed sensor which is inside the transmission and the transmission will have to be removed to replace it the other one s the output speed sensor is located directly above the passenger side trans-axle shaft. your input sensor is the sensor which tells the transmission when to shift and the output speed sensor tells the speedometer what it should display and both those parts are fairly cheap they are around 15-25 dollars but just remember if your input speed sensor is bad it is gonna cost you a minimum of 1000 dollars to have a mechanic fix as the transmission needs to be removed hope this is what you needed

There are no relays in a speed sensor circuit. If you are talking about the relay itself, the output speed sensor is going to be in the extension housing of the transmission, and it probably doesn't have an input speed sensor, since it uses the crankshaft speed sensor as an input speed sensor.

Input speed sensor


The input shaft speed sensor is located on the side of the transmission by where the engine "inputs" power to the transmission (via torque converter), thus rotating the input shaft.
The output speed sensor is located by where the axles attach to the transmission, and measures the speed that the transmission "outputs" to the axles (which make the wheels turn) and that data is also used for your speedometer reading.

This vehicle dont have a speedo cable its electronic the imput sensor is above the solinoid pac the output sensor at the rear of the transmission up on the side these transmissions are bad about speed sensors

My 99 dodge stratus shift to 2 and stays until i turn key off and on i can manual shift into 1 2 3 until i actually move in forward. if unhooked the battery already it didn't work any anserwer.


One or both of the speed sensors on transmission are bad. One is an input sensor, the other is the output sensor. If either one of these shows an open circuit (which they do when they go bad), then the transmission goes into Limp-Home mode and stays in 2nd gear. Those sensors are cheap enough where you should just go ahead and change both of them.
