Bushings on the transmission linkage and possibly adjustments on the linkage. There may be other issues, such as key related release. I don't agree this is a DIY situation. You leave it in park and it rolls down the hill toward a kid in the street?

SOURCE: My 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee is falling out of

If the shifter is moving from Drive to Neutral, then I would think the shift cable is in need of adjustment or the detents are worn out. I would suggest letting a transmission shop look at it for you.

Check this RECALL for 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT

Summary:
On certain sport utility vehicles, if a driver has not placed the shifter lever fully into the "park" position and leaves the vehicle running, the vehicle may unexpectedly move rearward after seeming to be stable.
Consequence: Inadvertent movement of the vehicle could result in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will install a secondary detent system to the floor shifter assembly. DaimlerChrysler sent interim notices to owners concerning this problem on March 22, 2002. Owner notification began September 23, 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

2001 jeep grand cherokee 4 0 Ive lost park park is now reverse reverse is neutral neutral is drive How do i adjust the linkage

It is probably not an adjustment issue. You probably have something broken or loose between the shift lever and the transmission. Look for a bad cable or housing or brackets broken near shifter. If it is floor shifted, it is possible that it has something broken in the shifter.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee shifter stuck in park

Could be the brake light switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park. Sometimes there is a button or tab near the shifter to unlock it in an emergency. Sometimes you can take it out of park if you turn the key but not to the on position.
Your owners manual should have these procedures, and you can do an internet search for the process to take the console out if needed.

I'd venture to say your linkage is out of adjustment - don't mess with the bands if the transmission worked before. Move the shift lever all the way to the lowest gear detent (farthest away from Park), then tighten the linkage cable adjustment until the shifter on the transmission is right at its stop on the transmission. The shift indicator needle should be centered on the letter. (If the transmission is now working properly and the needle is still off, you can adjust the needle inside the shifter housing by sliding its clip on the bracket attached to the shift lever. I didn't say it would be easy to get at it...)

pull the shifter back slowly out of park and see if it engauges before or after the reverse position this could just need an adjustment in the cable if not it's an 08 you probably still have a warranty on it i would take it to the dealer if no warranty ammco or any othyer transmission shop can run a few tests on it for a low fee
