Try ebay, or thefind.com or Perhaps you mean heating or cooling coils? same route, but your autoparts store may be the most helpful.

97 Nissan Pathfinder starter coils what do they look like

Replace the starter. It's not a coil, it's the solenoid. You can't get it without the starter.

What causes the spark controller to burn out?

Either engine computer (ecu) or ignition control module. It may have different names like power transistor unit, ICM, ECM etc. Power runs from engine computer to ignition module then that powers the coilpack/coils. Also check the ground connections as they corrode over time. If you replace any units make sure the make a great connection and use any heatsink paste required

Look more closely at the 1 and 4 coil, also, check for trigger signal to these coils. I mostly suspect the trigger unit.

How to test for spark

These things, like many modern cars, have "coil over plug" units. One tests the input to the unit (plug that attaches to the top at the side, by getting the pinout (from the schematic, etc.) usually putting a test adapter male/female in between wire and unit, looking for correct pulses. And one tests the unit itself, usually out of the car, by sending it pulses and seeing whether it makes a spark plug spark.
As a practical matter, if you are coding for misfires, and there is no other reason for them, and there are more than, say, 60,000 miles on the coil over plug units, one can just pay a little money for new one(s), and change it/them out. If you use the Hitachi units, you may (will) have better results.

What type of ignition does 1988 cutlass ceria 3.8l have 1 or 2 ?????

BOTH types of ignition coils were used on 1988 Cutlass Ciera. Type 1 is a single unit with 3 coils built into it. If one coil goes bad, you must replace the entire unit. Type 2 incorporates 3 separate coils mounted on the control module. These coils can be replaced individually. (See picture below) You simply have to LOOK at your ignition coils to see which type your Cutlass is equipped with. Please note that these systems are NOT interchangeable.

Car cranks but does not start, getting no spark out of the coil

Check the voltage to the coil - positive side of the coil. If there is no voltage then the fuse in the fuse box marked IGN is blown. Replace and proceed,, If the fuse blows yet again the coil is short and must be replaced.
If however there is voltage then the breaking voltage on the negative side of the coil must be checked. Check the platinum points/capacitor or the electronic ignition unit that is not triggering the coil.

On the magnavox coil pack the opposite plug on the coil pack fires at the same time. If it is dead only on one side it may be the coil pack {six terminals on one brick looking unit.}
