Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

When I turned it off, I forgot to put the shift into P. It started rolling, so I shifted it then. When I tried to start the car a little later, the steering column was locked. Usually, you push in the key, turn the steering wheel gently, and it unlocks. That isn't working. It won't unlock. The shifter is also locked, so I can't move it from park.

Leave it in park and try to roll the car back slightly while turning the key and jerk on the wheel. Feel free to manhandle the wheel, it can take it.

The shift, the steering wheel, and the key are all locked.

I've had this happen with Toyota's also. I'm telling you that you need to roll it back to unlock it. Get a friend to help you. Use some force. Eventually you should be able to get the key in to turn it and crack the steering wheel free.

What can I do to unlock the steering column on my 1996 Toyota Camry?

When the car started rolling it locked it up tight. Try putting the car in neutral, put the key in and push against the car in the opposite direction that it rolled while you turn the key and jerk on the steering wheel. You will need to slightly roll the car back to get it unlocked. Get a buddy to help you push the car if you can.

Gear shifter stuck in park and car will not start

The can can't run. Why need to shift...?
If you want to shift anyway. Be careful if down or up hill the car will roll.
Here if need to shift away:
-Put key in ignition, turn to start, but do not start.
Now apply brake then shift.

Car is in park on incline, and will not start.

There is a neutral safety switch to make sure car is neutral. If that switch went bad or becase your parked on incline the switch is not made up because car rolled back when you put it in park.If you can depending on the situation, put key in ignition, turn key till one click before it starts, apply emergency brake, depress regular brakes and shift car from park to drive then back to park.then turn off key and restart. If for some reason you try to shift out of park and it wont move you need to roll car a little forward or backward(have someone else do the pushing and be carefull not to put anyone in a pinch point between another car if this car is parked between two cars)With older cars this is usally the case.If this fixes your problem i would have a mechanic change switch because this will probrobly happen again.Be carefull.......

it sounds like your shift lever is loose and now your Park/Neutral safety switch is out of position. Try, with foot on brake, holding key in start while you move shift lever slowly from park to low.

Shift stuck in park

if your car has a shift lock, put your foot firmly on the break, unlock the shift lock, put it into neutral, then start the car. be careful because the car will roll if you let go of the brake. hopefully you can shift into drive once the car is started. if not, other things it could be is the shift cable.

When I start the car, I can't put the car in shift mode. Unless I am on a slight incline and put my emergency brake on to roll. What is the problem and how much will it cost me to fix?

Can't shift out of park because I've parked on a slight hill and my car has backed up slightly jaming the parking pawl in the automatic transmission after I have shifted into park but before I have set the parking brake. This is a complaint that Ford owners have had for years. Try this proceedure to see if this solves you problem and best of all it's Free. 1st when you park develop the habit of; while still having the foot brake down apply the park brake firmly first and then shift into park and then release the foot brake. Remember it is important to apply park brake with enough force to prevent the vehicle from rolling. What happens is in the rear of an automatic transmission there is a coarse gear that has a lever that engages this larger gear and when you shift into park range this lever goes into one of the spaces in the larger gear and stops the car from rolling. If the car starts to roll it can Jam the lever against the gear and make it difficult to shift out of park. By using the procedure I've outlined it prevents the lever OR Pawl from being jambed into the larger park gear. Try to make this a habit and you shouldn't have anymore problems.

The only fluid expansion tank I know of is for the cooling system, and if that is the case you my have a leak in the transmission cooler that is built into the radiator.
