As long as you keep check on the coolant level and listen to the car. You'll be OK. The sensor cost about $20 and aren't hard to replace. But like Ray said. It doesn't take to long to overheat and trash an engine. Especially one with high miles on it.

What diognostics say its a sensor ?????? No diagnostic's ever tell's you it's a sensor . You as a technician would need to prove that by testing electrical circuits , viewing coolant temp sensor . Hooking scan tool and trying to command the gauge with by directional control . The temp gauge not showing any temp. ? No movement ? Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
With the scan tool, perform the Lamp and Gauge Check in the IPC Special Functions list.

Would hate for you to replace the coolant temp sensor an find out that's not the problem ! Does the vehicle start an run good ,trans mission shift good ? If so it's not the coolant temp sensor .
Engine Coolant Temperature Gage
The ECM sends coolant temperature as determined by the coolant temperature sensor to the BCM via CAN serial data. The IPC displays the engine coolant temperature with the gage when the BCM sends a class 2 message to the IPC indicating coolant temperature percentage. The engine coolant temperature gage defaults to cold (0°) or below if:
• The ECM detects a malfunction in the engine coolant temperature sensor circuit.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the BCM.
• The BCM detects a loss of CAN communications with the ECM.

I have 2008 PT Cruiser; getting P0128 code; I've changed thermostat & temperature sensor; I have to fill the anti-freeze container every 2 weeks; temperature hand will not always be at half way point. ...


This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.
A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Low engine coolant level
  • Leaking or stuck open thermostat
  • Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
  • Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  • Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:
  • Verify coolant strength & level
  • Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
  • If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat
you have all ready replaced the thermostat with the proper temperature opening thermostat(hopefully) and coolant sensor, you say you have to refill the coolant every 2 weeks this indicates that you either have a coolant leak that needs to be checked out and repaired or you are burning coolant which indicates a possible head gasket problem which will have to be checked. a low coolant level will set this code as there is not enough coolant in the engine to get the engine to operating temperature and stay there. these last suggestions is where I would start to look.

P0118 for Volkswagen - (ECT) Engine Colant Temperature Circuit High

Symptoms:- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Possible causes:
(Inspect the following... Repair/Replace if necessary)
- Low engine coolant level
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness is open or shorted
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical circuit poor connection
- Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Faulty engine coolant thermostat

P0118 VOLKSWAGEN Description: The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is used to detect the engine coolant temperature. The sensor modifies a voltage signal from the Engine Control Module (ECM). When is the code detected?:When an excessively high voltage from the sensor is sent to ECM.

As with all engine codes there is no one solution fits all, here is the info on the code from the diagnostic material.
P0118 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input
Possible causes - Low engine coolant level
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness is open or shorted
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor electrical circuit poor connection
- Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor

OVERHEATING CAN BE CAUSE BY MANY THINGS LIKE FAULTY THERMOSTAT AND FAULTY RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP,TOO MUCH WATER IN COOLANT SYSTEM NEED 50 / 50 WATER AND ANTIFREEZE.LOOK FOR WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE LEAK, IF COOLANT LEAKING OUT WEEP HOLE WATER PUMP BAD NEED REPLACING.CHECK FOR LOW COOLANT LEVEL, YOUR RADIATOR OVERFLOW JUG SHOULD HAVE COOLANT AT THE FULL COLD MARK IF NOT KEEP ADDING COOLANT INTO COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG UNTIL COOLANT STOP DROPPING AND FULL COLD MARK, IF OVERFLOW COOLANT JUG WAS EMPTY RADIATOR IS LOW ON COOLANT.WHICH CAUSE AIR IN COOLANT SYSTEM KEEPING THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FROM BEING SUBMERGE IN HOT COOLANT WHICH TURN ON THE COOLANT FANS.WHEN ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GET CERTAIN SET TEMPERATURE LIKE 190 DEGREES THE PCM AND COOLANT SENSOR WILL TURN ON COOLANT FANS, IF VECHICLE OVERHEATING COOLANT FANS NOT WORKING EITHER YOU HAVE FAULTY ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CHECK COOLANT FANS FUSE AND RELAYS. This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. Similar codes: P0125
In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.
Symptoms You will likely not notice any drivability problems other than the MIL illumination.
Causes A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Low engine coolant level
  • Leaking or stuck open thermostat
  • Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
  • Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  • Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor
Possible Solutions Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:
  • Verify coolant strength & level
  • Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.

My friends car came up with this code and p0117 and he says when he accelerates it feels like its holding back


The P0117 code would not effect the acceleration of the vehicle. Probably just need a good tune up unless there are other codes showing in the system.

Trouble locating cooling sensor on 2003 gmc envoy


4.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2. Drain the coolant from the engine.
  3. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector. Engine coolant temperature sensor removal and installation gm-04-42-1509.gif

  4. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor from the engine.
To Install:
  1. Apply thread sealer P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor threads.
  2. Install the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor into the engine. Torque the sensor to 12 ft-lb (16 Nm).
  3. Connect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector.
  4. Refill the engine with coolant.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
5.3L & 6.0L Engines To Remove:
  1. Drain the coolant from the engine.
  2. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector. Engine coolant temperature sensor removal and installation removeect.gif

  3. Remove the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor from the left cylinder head.
To Install:
  1. Apply thread sealer P/N 12346004 or equivalent to the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor threads.
  2. Install the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor into the left cylinder head. Torque the sensor to 15 ft-lb (20 Nm).
  3. Connect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector.
  4. Refill the engine with coolant.
