Question about 2002 Toyota Celica GT

1 Answer

I have a 2002 Toyota Celica GT and I seem to be getting horrible gas mileage/Gas Gauge Fluctuates. I have replaced the Sending Unit.

Also, I have attached a collage of photos that I was able to capture on my cell phone of what its doing to help understand what could be the problem/issue. If you need further information to identify the problem, please ask. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you so much! Link to photo:

Check for a disconnected vacuum hose. Does it still drive normally? or does it feel like lack of power on acceleration?
is it an automatic? are you putting the shift lever into drive which is one back from neutral.

is your breaks dragging? jack up one wheel at a time and spin it. if it doesn't spin freely then does it feel like the brakes are on?

is hand brakes cable stuck putting the park brakes on?

did you change the air filter?

Testimonial: "It's manual transmission. I dropped off @ this mechanics and they said its a faulty fuel sending unit. Ironic. Must of been a bad fuel sending unit but either way.. no leaks have been found. I guess have to get another fuel sending unit and hopefully that fixes the issue."

When my fuel gauge light indicates that I need to refuel i fill up on only 6 gallons why not 15?

it sounds like the float on the sending unit is not coming all the way up. or sending the wrong information to the fuel gauge on the dashboard. you may need to replace the sending unit

Gas gauge not working?

more than likely the sending unit paty of fuel pump module unit is going bad, unfortunately this is one unit approx $350. you can check your connections at wiring plugs going to it ,but this is pretty common on g.m. vechiles

Gas gauge wont work and horrible gas mileage

It should get 22 city and just over 28 hwy.Combined should be about 24 mpg. With a 13.2 gallon tank you should get about 285 miles on a tank. 142 on a half tank and 71 on 1/4 tank. If it gets less you should replace things like air & fuel filter, plugs, pcv valve. Also check pvc hose going to intake manifold while running engine. Sounds like you need to replace the tank sending unit. My focus does pretty good on gas if it is driven easy like grand ma drives.

2006 envoy gas cap won't tighten and the fuel gauge reads empty on fill up and fluctuates back and forth.

You can just replace the gas cap...However about the fuel guage fluctuates back and forth...thats due to the sending unit, which is located on the fuel pump itself

Fuel gauge issues

Sounds like you've got a defective fuel level sending unit. It's in your tank, probably attached to the boost pump assembly. Normally the top of the tank can be accessed via the trunk where you should be able to remove the assembly for replacement. While you're in there, look around in the tank with a very bright flashlight for any debris or pieces from the assembly laying on the bottom.

Horrible gas mileage can be caused by very many things. Try to buy an OBDII diagnostic scanner to figure out what's malfunctioning. Sensors don't last very long, and can wreak havoc on performance and economy.
