Its a sensor under the brake. You can actually pull the shifter with a little force and it will go into gear. It will cost about $400 at a good garage. Looking at $600 and more at dealer. When you force it into gear, you are not hurting the transmission, just over riding the sensor. Your "D" will not light up on the dash or at the shifter untiol you fix it.

It is located to the passenger side firewall near the strut tower. There is a solenoid on top of it.

Look at the swith on the brake pedal, it shoud have two green wires on it. Make sure it is not melted or the wire is broken. If it is damaged you can connect the 2 wires together to get it into gear, but this should be temporary as it bypasses the neutral safety switch.
